In 1931, in the early days of the Great Depression, the governor of Louisiana devised a bold plan. Huey P. Long wanted to build the nation’s largest building made of limestone and marble from Vermont and Italy. He assured residents that a good, modern building would save the government money. Just 14 months and $5 million later, the home is complete!

The Louisiana Capitol in Baton Rouge At 34 feet tall, the state capitol in Baton Rouge is still the tallest in the United States. Its grounds and gardens span 27 acres and offer sweeping views of the Capitol from every angle.

There is a visitor center on the first floor and a viewing area on the 27th floor, but pets are not allowed inside. However, if you want to appreciate the Capitol and its properties more you will find plenty of shady benches to wait with your pets. We decided to spend the rest of our time outside, and there is so much to see!
Leashed pets are welcome in all areas of the Capitol and Gardens, but are not allowed inside the building.
Pets Pets must be kept on a leash at all times while in the Louisiana State Capitol. Pet waste should be picked up and disposed of properly. Pets are not allowed on the premises.
The main stairs lead up to the Capitol, each of 48 stairs labeled for the states in the order they were added to the Union. (There were only 48 states when the building was completed. Alaska and Hawaii share the first tier and joined upon receiving title.)

In 1935, three years after the building was completed, Senator Long was assassinated on the first floor near the Governor’s office. He was buried in the middle of a field, on his grave is a picture of the statue he loved in his home.
The country in which its capital is located has its own history. The area provides access to the lower Mississippi River and evidence of its military sites can still be seen. West of the Capitol, the Pentagon Barracks was constructed between 1819 and 1824 and was designed to hold more than 1,000 soldiers. They now serve as the offices of the Lieutenant Governor and the private homes of state legislators.
To the east is Arsenal Park, where a warehouse built in 1838 to store weapons still stands. Here you will also see cannons on top of a traditional American building that is approximately 1,000 years old.
All of these ancient sites have paved pathways beneath towering palm trees that invite you to wander freely, or to find a seat on the horizon of all that was and will be.

Behind the Capitol is Capitol Lake, and another paved path leads to the shore. Within minutes of what happened in the state, the turtles wake up on their own after seeing the wood and the ducks run towards their nests.
This is a great place to pack a picnic, bring a book and a blanket, and spend the afternoon at the beach. But remember, a few blocks away from the mighty Mississippi and a stroll along the Riverfront Plaza is a must! The number of boats is stable, and tugboats are like worker bees carrying large cargo carriers.

Their patio seating area is right next to the fountain, they’re happy to bring your little one, and their tables are wide enough to give larger dogs room to spread out – which Buster really appreciated!

Audubon Park is home to the Audubon Zoo, a family-friendly facility that welcomes pets during tours. Dogs are allowed on leashes in zoos, but not in animal exhibits.
On the other side of the Big Easy is Crescent Park, a riverside park in the Bywater neighborhood. Crescent Park is long and narrow, spanning 20 urban acres along the Mississippi River. The park offers unparalleled views of the river as you take the 1.4-mile walk with your pet. This path connects to the French Market in the French Quarter, an outdoor dog market.
