The 2019 Dexter Epic Dog Journey has officially begun! There were many local day trips with dogs in January and February, but Cambridge, Ohio was our first weekend getaway for our pets. Traveling with a dog is always more fun with friends, so I invited Dexter’s best friend Levy and his mom Chris to join us.

Cambridge, Ohio is located in Guernsey County in southeastern Ohio, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. This small town of about 13,000 residents is an ideal place for dog watching.

Our first stop was lunch at McKenna Market in downtown Cambridge. This dog-friendly restaurant has outdoor seating and the bright sun kept us warm and dry even in March! This family-owned market is owned by the McKenna family, who have been in the food and market business since the 1970s. The family restored the centuries-old historic building, which soon became a meeting place for meals. McKenna Market is known for its delicious homemade appetizers and salads. We know we’re in for a great experience.

The menu was extensive and offered a variety of dishes to suit all tastes. Chris ordered the shrimp basket and I chose the chicken fiesta salad. There was hot coffee waiting for us and the dogs, as well as fresh water and dog treats.

While we were drinking coffee, people came up to us, talked and petted their dogs. They were a huge success and everyone was so nice and friendly. During our lunch, McKenna’s front door was bustling with activity. They have a fashion business. When our food arrived, I quickly realized why. The food was amazing!

When I travel I try to order food that is not my usual and I am usually very pleased. The fiesta salad was amazing! It was very fresh, colorful and full of flavour. My taste buds and stomach were very pleased. The crispy shrimp and fries look hot and inviting. She said they were cooked perfectly.

After lunch I stopped by McKenna Market. It was filled with great appetizers, fruit, desserts, delicious cheeses, meats, homemade and local food, freshly ground coffee beans, vintage sodas, wines and more. For dinner, I ordered some of their famous sandwiches along with a bag of freshly ground coffee.

We thought it would be fun to drive around the city looking for fun and unusual statues, murals and landmarks. We were not disappointed. Cambridge was the home of former astronaut and US Senator John Glenn. Although we weren’t able to visit the John and Annie Glenn Museum with our dog, we did find a historical link to it in Ohio.

Another local celebrity was William Boyd. William Boyd made a name for himself as cowboy star Hopalong Cassidy, appearing on screen in the 1930s and 40s and on television in the 1950s. Cambridge has the Hopalong Cassidy Trail, a collection of monuments displayed in various locations in the historic center of Cambridge. It was interesting to find some of the exhibits.

Since our tummies were craving something sweet, we went to Kennedy’s Bakery. Kennedy’s Bakery has been serving Cambridge since 1925. Family members have been cooking for over 80 years. This home bakery seems like the perfect place to buy baked goods.

When I walked in, I was greeted by a warm smile and the sweet smell of fresh baked goods. There were so many delicious dishes to choose from! I was surrounded by fresh cakes, breads, brownies, cookies, muffins, doughnuts, pastries, candies and more.

One owner, Patty, gave me a behind-the-scenes tour. I was surprised at how big the bakery actually was. They had old ovens and appliances that they had used since the beginning of the business. I really enjoyed the family’s love and dedication to the bakery and the community. It was a very good experience.

Before I left, I ordered a rich chocolate cake, fresh donuts and their best-selling tea biscuits. As I sunk my teeth into the decadent cupcake, I knew this cupcake was made with love and fresh ingredients. The tea biscuits were so sweet that I almost didn’t want to eat them. But I’m glad I did it; They were moist and had just the right amount of sweetness.

It was time for us to call it a day and head to our dog-friendly cabin at the Salt Fork Lodge and Conference Center (click here for more information about the cabin). After feeding the dogs, Chris and I were ready to go grocery shopping at McKenna Market. I ordered the Roscoe Village Chicken Salad and Chris ordered the McKenna’s Favorite. Mackina’s favorite was loaded with capicola, salami, pepperoni and an Italian four-cheese blend. My salad was absolutely amazing. There were large pieces of chicken with a lot of sauce, not what you would think of ordering a chicken salad sandwich. It was very unusual and tasty.

After a full day of exploring Cambridge, Ohio, it was time to hit the road and get some rest before the adventure ahead. Saturday should be a full day of hiking and exploring Ohio’s largest state park, Salt Fork. But first: Sleep!

Many people visit Ohio in the fall, when the hardwood trees that cover the state’s hills turn spectacular oranges and reds. With daytime temperatures exceeding 70° in September and 60° in October, this is a great time of year for outdoor activities. However, this is also one of the busiest periods for travel, so don’t expect any hotel deals in the fall.
