If we find the key to the van, she runs straight to the front door for fear of being left behind. He is perfectly content on the road with his ears flapping in the wind.
So of course, if we plan a long trip in our van, Ella is a key factor in the plan. Since Ella came into our lives, we’ve discovered some of the best dog-friendly campsites and, perhaps most importantly, we’ve learned what a “dog-friendly” campsite really is to us.
It may seem obvious, but a few times we’ve been caught assuming a campsite would welcome Ella with open arms, only to be told “no dogs allowed”. Call us naive, but until we had our own dog it never occurred to me that some campsites don’t allow dogs.
Dog-friendly Camping In Wales
These are few and far between, but it’s definitely worth learning from our mistakes and testing ahead of time. Most major booking sites, such as Cool Camping and Pitchup, have a filter that can be used to remove dog-friendly sites. Many campsites will also state on their website whether they allow dogs or not, and if they don’t you can always call ahead and ask.
One thing I love about life with Ella is that she forces us to explore our immediate surroundings. Almost all campsites have a “dogs on leash” policy (which is good of course!) but our dog is active and needs to be let out at least a couple of times a day, which means finding a safe place.
Luckily, camping and wilderness go hand in hand and we always seem to discover a hidden gem from our campsite.
Before we reserve a campsite, we look at Google Maps to find out how the land is laid out. We explore forests or rivers or common land with marked paths. Many campsites are on or near farmland, so we also check that we can keep Ella away from livestock or crops when she runs.

It’s worth checking whether local attractions and activities are dog-friendly, as well as any pubs, cafes and restaurants you might want to visit.
This is especially important if you are going on a beach holiday in Devon or Cornwall. You can spend ages carefully finding the perfect campsite near a beautiful beach, only to find out that your dog is not allowed on that beach.
In our experience, it pays to check in advance or your travel plan could be thrown out the window. And on the other hand, you may be pleasantly surprised. We recently managed to hire a canoe to take Ella down the River Wye, which I never thought was in the cards!
Finally, something that is always a big plus in our opinion (but a bit hard to come by) is a campsite with shaded fields. Being able to park in a shady spot makes it a little more comfortable for Ella (and us, if we want to lie down!).

It’s fair to ask about that. Many campsites will accommodate where possible and reserve a shady spot for you if they have one.
So with that in mind, here are our 5 dog friendly campsites in England and Wales. They don’t tick every box, but all of these sites are Ella and I’ll be back…
A relaxed and spacious campsite close to the North Devon coast. Dogs are welcome at Leeds, but this is a working farm, so be careful with livestock. The campsite is really nice with good facilities and a fantastic farm shop on site. It is also close to Woolacombe beach which is dog friendly (except for a very small part) and there are endless sand dunes to explore.
If your dog needs to blow off some steam before breakfast… head towards the campsite entrance and you will see a small path on the right hand side. Follow this path (off road) and it will take you over a bridge and into a quiet forest. We didn’t see another soul there!

A large, open plot in the heart of the Lakes with a relaxed feel and no marked height. There are countless wild bathing spots in the area and a nearby village is only a short drive away. The bar and cafe we visited in the village were both dog friendly and there is plenty to explore in the area. The only thing to watch out for in the Lake District is the possible presence of blue-green algae in some lakes. This can be incredibly dangerous for dogs (and not good for humans either), so be aware of this before diving in. There is lots of information about what to look for on Gov.uk.
If your dog needs a breather before breakfast… cross the bridge at the campsite entrance and into the forest from there. There is a path that goes along the stream that just keeps running!
A cheap and pleasant campsite on a working farm. Dogs are welcome on leads, although this is a working farm again. What we love about this site is how informal it is. It’s basically just an arena with a “park where you want” arrangement. It’s close to Glastonbury (a town which, as we discovered, loves dogs – Ella never got much attention). Very handy for walking tours and also close to a fantastic wild swimming spot in West Ludford.
If your dog needs to let off some steam before breakfast… turn right on the road and after a few minutes you will come to a footpath on the right. This is the start of a network of paths that run through farmland. Be aware that sometimes there are cattle in the fields near the road.

This large, open campsite on a cliff is one of our all-time favourites. We discovered it a few years ago when we were looking for somewhere to go down with a large group of friends. We wanted to be able to build a campfire, have a few drinks and generally not worry about disturbing anyone else. Celtic Camping proved to be the perfect location for this – there’s plenty of space for everyone to get away from each other and great coastal walks right from the campsite. The sea view is also spectacular! And if you need to get into civilization, St Davids is just a short drive away.
If your dog needs to blow off some steam before breakfast… head to the sea and take the coastal route in either direction. Then it’s just a matter of continuing!
