I’m a national park addict, I love dogs, and I like to take my “main man” everywhere. I still like to go where he can come with me. (Besides the annual trip abroad somewhere like Greece, Patagonia, or Costa Rica!)

Dog-friendly Getaways In Bc

Dogs are welcome in almost every national park in the United States, but what they can and can’t do varies. I’ve been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit nearly every US National Park (56/63 by my count with all others located in Alaska and Samoa as of this writing) without a dog. As Cotopaxi and I go everywhere together. So I began to explore, investigate and experience the US National Park that he was only allowed to be a part of; But one is allowed to get out of the car and walk with me!

Cotopaxi and I is one of several dog-friendly trails in Maine’s southwestern port of Acadia National Park.

Taking your dog to a national park is a privilege. Please pick them up, clean up later, and be careful. Most bear encounters on the Appalachian Trail are caused by unsuspecting dogs, a ranger informed me when I traveled in 2023.

Cotopaxi is B.A.R.K. Ranger and if you choose to take someone as the best companion in the world, please think about it.

Discover The Beauty Of Dog-friendly Paris Mountain State Park

We stayed in Virginia’s Long Narrows National Park for 10 days while I hiked 110 miles of the Appalachian Trail. The AT grade in this park is less steep than most ATs and is great for hiking. Big Meadows Lodge has pet-friendly rooms and we have several dogs at all three campsites. The park’s campgrounds provide access to Waysides which are great for short hikes when we’re not on the AT. Overall, the park is accessible to DC, Baltimore and many East Coast cities. You feel good when you know your rod and you will be able to go out and explore. Of all the dog-friendly US national parks I’ve visited, this might be the best.

From Endless Wall Trails to Long Point to Kemoor Miner, West Virginia National Park is known for nearby boating and rock climbing/mountain biking. It also sports excellent dog-friendly walking trails.

Fayetteville is a fun little town with makers, artists, breweries and coffee shops. We stayed at a Sasquatch themed Airbnb with a large pet friendly fenced yard.

Cotopaxi probably won’t be paddling a new river any time soon (her kayaking and canoeing experience is shaky). He likes to hike in NRG, and it’s great to visit this new national park.

Dog Friendly Colorado

The first national park at Cotopaxi was his first tent camping experience and his first road trip. The national park and the park border each other and we did the 3 Dune Challenge which is technically within the park. According to their website “Pets are allowed in National and State Parks. Dogs are welcome on all beaches, except for the lifeguard swimming area at West Beach and State Park. They are on the Pinhook Bog Trail and Glenwood Dunes Trail. Allowed on all trails except the system.

This is an often overlooked US National Park. It is close to Chicago and accessible to much of the Great Lakes region. We camped at Dunewood Campground and from there you can walk and bike along Lake Michigan through Beverly Shores. Make sure you get good grub at Goblin and Grocer (a short walk from the campground).

We live summers in two different small towns in northern Michigan that border this beautiful national lake on Lake Michigan.

And this includes road maintenance, cleaning and many other things. It opened to Cotopaxi and I always walked the path. We have several dog-friendly trail options from Pyramid Point to Empire Bluff to Platte River Trails to Alligator Hill. The only two trails I did that weren’t dog friendly were Climbing Dune and Swimming Point.

Uphill and downhill grades are dog-friendly. The small towns surrounding Sleeping Bear (Franklin, Interlochen, Empire, Leelanau, Leland, Northport, and many others) are also very dog friendly.

My partner and I stayed at the Cotopaxi house where the only adventures I had were boating and a trip back home to the Manitou Islands. I wrote about visiting the Manitou Islands on my website here!

Perfect for walking between Cotopaxi and Yucca in Joshua Tree National Park and large dirt roads with few cars!

Example: We currently live in Joshua Tree California, near the National Park. Dogs are allowed to walk/run there on the dirt road (which we usually do) but not on the side of the road. This is because the water source of the big sheep is threatened on the road. Resources are essential to their survival and they see dogs as a threat. The sheep will not go to the water source if they smell/see/feel the dog. The other two parks he visited were Death Valley and Saguaro but he was not allowed to hike. Then there are parks like the Grand Canyon. There are many paths that he is not allowed but he can walk all the way. The Grand Canyon is a big place, you know it needs smooth roads. It’s long.

7 Dog-friendly Ski Lodges

Very friendly like the ones on our list, limited but possible like the Grand Canyon, and then things that require you to get creative or leave them at home like the Joshua tree.

If you insist on walking your dog and don’t want to be out of the way then the National Forest is the place for you! These are very less strict about where and when your dog can roam (also on a leash with a nice bag of course) but you and your dog can get after it.

Visiting the national park and can bring your dog is an unforgettable experience. Depending on how you want to spend your time there, you should consider deciding which park to visit with them. And they can be left at home or with friends!
