First, we had to deal with the big picture. As for the size of the facility, we knew we wanted it to be an “every grocery store, every gas station parking lot.” We knew we didn’t want an RV for a number of reasons, including the fact that long stairs seemed like a bad idea for medium-sized dogs.

We’ve been eyeing the B+/small C range for a while and are seriously considering the LTV Unity Bed with Murphy. We completely ruled out the C-Class because they’re still in the “have to tow the car” size range, and the smaller murphy beds because the bed felt like there was almost no room to move down. . Since we really value our sleeping comfort, we thought we didn’t want a floor plan with a back sofa that leans against the bed. It was impossible for all these pads to form a smooth surface. We also didn’t want to waste bedroom space or stuff the bed every night. For a long time we thought we’d go for the Travato 59G with the corner bed on wheels: it actually had a great under-bed storage layout, with the tailgate still usable. This 2019 model went so far as to detail the change from a propane refrigerator – a detail I really liked (Tommy).
Reading other people’s experiences with the 59G finally convinced us that the corner bed was not for us. Our dogs were too tall to jump on their own, and our dogs were too heavy to lift regularly (I have to lift our 65+ pound Lily to get her into our Jeep lift, which is a lot). It looks very different if you only have knee-sized pets. With us, even if we let the dogs sleep on the floor all the time, they will end up piling up where you have to get off the loft bed and there will be lots of pinched tails. And with our newest addition, we have three dogs in the 50-65 pound range – they take up a lot of space and it’s guaranteed to be at least one of them.
Given the above, we wanted a layout with a double bed and a corridor in the middle, although the back door would have been ridiculously open just for poppers.

Most two-berth vans convert into a large bed by putting a table in the middle, but I doubt we’ll ever do that. We like to keep our nightly routines short and simple, as well as our arrival/departure routines.
We plan to leave our bed in place during the day, cover it with some sort of day blanket, and place the day bed on the floor as a dog bed at night.
After reading the reviews we chose the Travato 59K, then the 2019 model or later as they are standard. The new models are even more dog-friendly: from 2020.5, the footboards have loops for attaching the leash. We decided to let someone else’s price drop for the first year and buy some lightly used machines.
To save costs and since we no longer work full time, we decided to avoid the Volta lithium system. If we leave the dogs in the parking lot, no lithium means no air conditioning. We will post the lithium batteries later as our project if we need to use them. For everyday use, we expect it to be much more nimble than our A-Class, so we believe we’ll get the performance mainly from the driving. And if we stay longer in the car, we have a solar device and a generator if needed.

To give you an idea of how much we love 59K, one of the biggest downfalls for us is that the outdoor shower is not connected to hot water, so all the muddy dogs are bathed in cold water. It’s not much of a compromise.
We found a used 59K with some options we really liked: heated tanks and a sunroof. Tank heaters (“hot drain” in Winnebago terminology) help in the winter, and the 2019 Travato’s fresh water line is already inside the unit to protect it from freezing. Casement windows allow us to open the windows even in heavy rain and they can be closed well even when they are opened a little. Likewise, the Travato ceiling fan has a rain cover and can stay outside in the rain. After 1300 miles we have a van and the dogs are slowly getting used to it. We begin to get answers to our open questions through experience.
I didn’t know how the door would play, but I think the dogs would be very good at using and behaving when the door was opened.
Delta is still learning to wait and will be calm as a bride if she tries to force her way out, but she is making great strides in her patience.

We were worried that the dogs would have to “reverse” the trail, but they all seem to be able to roll when needed. They can also walk around each other and if they are standing or lying on the pavement, we can run over them.
Our dogs don’t jump from the hallway to the bed, at least not yet. One of the beds ends up in the kitchen cupboards, so there isn’t much room to jump. The second bed is barrier-free and the dogs stay there and then walk easily down the hall to the bed they want.
Our Travato has a vinyl floor and is non-slip for dogs. The second Lily jumped out the side door, she slipped and almost ran into the kitchen cupboards. We found mats at the hardware store for an unobtrusive $8 that were the perfect size and easy to cut as needed. We covered the floor with them and the dogs seem much happier.

Our A-Class had a separate rear corner exhaust on the passenger side and the generator exhaust was on the driver’s side. I was worried that a careless dog would take a bite out of his ear when we walked the dogs right after we got out and the area near the generator gas was Mush’s favorite haunt.

On the Travata, both exhausts are on the driver’s side, away from where the dogs might be. Also, since I doubt the dogs will fit under the van, there will be less for the dogs since there is less room. Mushy is saddened by the loss of his private room in the basement.
Lily tends to lie between the two front seats when we drive. This was also the seat in the A-Class, and in Jeeps you usually stand at least part of the way on the center console. He is the people’s dog and wants to be with us.
