Dog Friendly Vacations West Coast

Dog Friendly Vacations West Coast

Dog Friendly Vacations West Coast – In this post, I want to take a look at the most dog-friendly places in the West ~ focusing on California and Oregon, two states where you can easily travel with a pet (I know because I travel here ALL THE TIME)!  On these sites, I like to look for the best dog-friendly spots: namely lots of dog parks or dog-friendly beaches, great pet-friendly hotels, and relaxing city sounds that make it easy to bring your own. stuck on tour.  And I discovered beautiful places, like Bend, Oregon, and Carmel in California….among many others.  Join me and my dog Dylan as we search for the “Best Dog Friendly Places on the West Coast!”

While my go-to dog beach in Oregon is Cannon Beach, be warned: almost EVERY beach in Oregon is dog friendly, and has fewer rules and restrictions than California beaches! Translation: The Oregon coast is the IDEAL place for a dog-friendly road trip. Photo of Gold Beach, Oregon.

I love Cannon Beach for many reasons: charming town, lots of great restaurants, COFFEE (Sleeping Monk!!), lots of luxury, pet friendly hotels, and of course: THE BEACH, which is 100% pet friendly.  NO ties required here!!  Oregon is more relaxed than California in this regard.  And the views from Haystack Rock will take your breath away, especially at sunset.  Take a walk along Ocean Avenue with your dog, eat a bowl of chowder on one of the many outdoor patios, and be sure to stop by the cute pet shop around the corner: Puppy Love by the Sea.

45 Family & Dog-friendly Attractions In Devon

***My Picks for Best Pet Friendly Hotels in Cannon Beach: This is a partnership between: The Ocean Lodge & Surfsand Resort.  Nice beachfront, luxury hotel, and very pet friendly.  Ocean Lodge rooms are bigger and take advantage of the views ~ but Surfsand is closer to town and Haystack Rock, the rooms are nice, and their Wayfarer Restaurant is my favorite place in town (and room service)…

Bend is where I currently live in the United States, and honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever lived somewhere that likes pets.  The impressive number of dog parks in Bend alone puts California’s dog parks to shame, and every restaurant in town with a patio is dog-friendly, including: McMenamin’s St. Francis School (pub, brewery, cinema, concert venue, cigar bar and hotel all rolled into one Catholic School), Bare Winery, Avid Cider, Crux Brewing, 10 Barrel. and the list goes on… & ON.

There are more dog-friendly parks, hotels, and restaurants per capita in Bend than any other city on this list! Dylan is shown here on the famous Deschutes River Trail in downtown Bend.

***My Pick for Best Pet-Friendly Hotel in Bend: Tetherow Golf Resort.  At Tetherow, you have a luxury golf course home with AMAZING mountain views ~ and you’re only 5 minutes from downtown Bend and the popular Old Mill District.  This is the best place for pets to live in the city.  Otherwise, head to Sunriver Resort, about 20 minutes south of Bend: one of the best family vacation spots in the US.

The 11 Most Dog-friendly Beaches In The U.s.

Carmel Main Beach is my favorite dog-friendly beach in the world: Pebble Beach is on the right, and if you follow the beach to the left, you’ll see cypress trees framing your view. all kinds of million-dollar homes… There’s a reason why Clint Eastwood lives here: there’s something special about Carmel.

And the city loves dogs: they’re welcome everywhere ~ but I love Forge in its beautiful outdoor forest, with its very dog-friendly menu…

Carmel isn’t the only place in Monterey Bay with stunning ocean views: head to Pacific Grove and walk along the shore to see these views…

*** My Favorite Big Dog Hotel in Carmel: The Lodge at Pebble Beach.  Yes, darling~ but according to my parents and the helpful maid: every room here is pet friendly!  And you can bring any size dog.  For an affordable option in Carmel, try Doris Day’s pup-friendly Cypress Inn.

I grew up in Orange County, and last week I met some friends in Huntington Beach at the new outdoor mall, Pacific City.  On my way home for Christmas, I took Dylan with me ~ which meant I had to take him to the mall…. We were invited to a luxury boutique, he had coffee with us, and we all had lunch at Simmzy’s bar, overlooking the pier and the sea.  I would go back in a heartbeat!  And there’s another reason to visit Huntington with your dog: it’s the ONLY beach in Orange Country where dogs are allowed off-leash.

***My Best Dog Friendly Hotel in Huntington Beach: Kimpton Shorebreak Huntington Beach.  Kimptons is very popular and dog friendly…they even offer happy hour for dogs!  This one in particular has a romantic feel, with ocean views complemented by light blues ~ and you’re just steps from the pier, Main Street, and the ocean.  And Huntington dog beach is just a few miles north…

San Diego has not one but two dog beaches, and both are in remote areas: Del Mar and Coronado.  Dylan and I tried Del Mar dog beach last year, just south of Encinitas.  It’s not as big as Carmel beach: it’s still very beautiful.  Happy dogs run in and out of the water, the people are relaxed and friendly, and parking is easy with spots at both beach entrance roads.  Coronado Beach has pristine white sand and is located within the historic, pet-friendly Hotel Del Coronado.

Coronado Dog Beach is one of the best places to play with your pup in the sand in Southern California.

Dog Friendly Hampshire

***My Best Dog Friendly Hotels in San Diego: San Diego is big, so it depends on where you want to go.  For the northern districts, try the upscale L’Auberge Del Mar, which accepts two dogs of any size.  If you’re in the Gaslamp City, try the contemporary Hotel Indigo, with its trendy rooftop.  And if you want to get closer to Coronado’s legendary dog beach, check out Hotel del Coronado ~ where three restaurants are pet friendly!  (Dogs up to 40 pounds only at Del….)

That sums up my picks for the best dog-friendly places on the West Coast!  One thing I’d like to add: Some of the travel blogs I’ve read lately seem to be written by A.I. or by organizers who no longer know how to get to the places they recommend.  Rest assured: every place on this list I visited last year, so my recommendations are up-to-date and focused for 2020 and beyond!

I’ve been traveling between California and Oregon every year since 2010, with Dylan ~ so all of these places are places I’ve actually visited, and look forward to returning to every year.
