Freedom Fast Cats and Keppel Connection allow dogs on ferries (not cruises). Yappun, the heart of the Capricorn Coast, is the perfect dog-friendly beach destination. Located 30 minutes drive from Rockhampton and less than 8 hours north of Brisbane. Find out what’s on offer when visiting Yeppoon, Queensland with your dog.

One of the main attractions of Yeppoon and the Capricorn Coast are the many beautiful beaches that lie between Yeppoon and the Emu Park in the south.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fortunately, the default rule for local Livingston County beaches is that dogs are allowed on all beaches before 8 a.m. and after 4 p.m., unless otherwise noted. Thus, almost all beaches in the area are dog friendly!

In my research, I haven’t seen any beaches where dogs are not allowed, although of course the beaches at North Byfield National Park are closed.

On my visit in 2021, the local tourism website stated that dogs were not allowed at Yapon Main Beach, Emu Park Beach and Koi Bay Beach. However, I can confirm that Cooee Bay Beach had standard signs banning dogs before 8am and after 4pm, while Yeppoon Main Beach or Emu Park Beach did not. In the latter two cases, dogs are probably allowed to be on a leash, but away from patrolled areas.

There are two beaches with different rules: Farnborough Beach in Bengali and Fisherman’s Beach in Emo Park. On both coasts, dogs are allowed on a leash all day, but not on weekends or holidays, when they must be on a leash.

5 Top Dog-friendly Islands In Queensland To Visit

Farnborough Beach Leisure Area is located between Bengali Boat Landing and Barwells Creek and the easiest access is on Hines Avenue, with a 4WD entrance. At Fisherman’s Beach, the off-leash section begins 150 meters north of the boat ramp, and off-leash access is permitted in advance.

Although alligators are rarely a problem this far south, manatees can be a threat during the summer months, so be careful during turtle nesting season from October to March. If there are turtles around, keep your distance and keep dogs on a leash or off the beach altogether.

Along with visiting local beaches, consider these ideas for sightseeing on your dog-friendly Japan vacation…

One of the highlights of a trip to Japan is a trip to the great Keppel Island. Great beaches, swimming and snorkelling make for a great day out for the whole family, and luckily the dogs can get involved too.

The Coast Motel

There are two ferry options to Great Keppel Island, both dog friendly. We traveled with Keppel Connections, which allows dogs for free. Unlike the Magnetic Island ferry, our dog was not required to wear a muzzle.

There are also large Freedom Fast cats that charge $5 for small dogs and $10 for large dogs. Both ferries run for 30 minutes and operate on the same schedule.

When you arrive at Great Keppel Island, you will notice that there are no signs on the beaches indicating whether or not dogs are allowed. However, the island is part of Livingstonshire, as is Japan, so the same standards apply as dogs are allowed on beaches and off-leash before 8am and after 4pm. Great Keppel Island is not mentioned on their website.

The ferry takes you directly to Sandy Fisherman’s Beach in the center of the island. I recommend walking to the southern end of the beach, where a short path begins to the nearby beaches, including Shelving Beach.

Yeppoon Motels At The Best Price

Shelving Beach is one of the most popular snorkeling beaches on the island and probably the easiest to visit if you don’t have your own boat. The walk takes about 5-10 minutes, although the last part of the path is quite difficult, especially if you are on your feet like we were! There are reef areas on either side of the beach. We preferred the spot on the left side, where it was easier to get to after low tide.

If you brought a picnic lunch I recommend going around Shelving Beach, Monkey Beach and Long Beach. Monkey Beach is said to have even better snorkeling, but we didn’t have enough time to explore. However, we made it to Long Beach, a beautiful, long and peaceful beach. We had the beach close by (and we could leave the dog off leash). The eastern part is actually a nude beach, although it was empty when we visited.

Please note that the footpaths around Great Keppel Island are not as well maintained as the island’s former resort has been closed for many years. It’s probably best to stick to the trails starting at the end of Fisherman’s Beach or ask the local staff for directions.

If you reach the island via the Keppel Connection ferry, you can add lunch and a drink on the Great Keppel Island Highway. It’s good value and the burger and chips were delicious. However, if you want to make the most of exploring the island, a stroll to the bistro at the northern end of Fisherman’s Beach is a long walk.

The Bistro at Great Keppel Island Hideaway is largely outdoors and dog-friendly, with plenty of water bowls. Although as I was leaving I saw a sign that said “No dogs beyond this point” but I’m not sure which area that applies to.

Unfortunately, most hotels on Great Keppel Island don’t allow dogs, so it’s best to only visit as part of a day trip. If you plan to stay a night or two, find out if the vacation rental currently allows dogs.

If you want to enjoy the area’s beautiful beaches without getting your feet dirty in the sand, a popular walking route for both people and dogs runs along Yeppoon Beach. Take your time: There are plenty of picnic benches and sunbeds along the way, not to mention a number of beachside cafes that are usually dog-friendly.

Dogs must be on a leash and there are plenty of reminders to pick up after your dog, as well as plenty of litter and poop bags. Please note that dogs are not allowed in the Yeppoon Lagoon (but can roam outside) and Keppel Kraken water play area.

Unfortunately, many of the area’s other coastal walks, such as the Bluff Point Scenic Walk and the Fun Rock Lookout Trail, are located in small parts of Capricorn Coast National Park.

Emo Park is just a 15-minute drive south of Yapon. In addition to Fisherman’s Beach, which is mostly on the strip, there are two historic sites. On the hill above the pier is the statue of the “Singing Ship”, a memorial to Captain Cook which was erected in 1970. Hear its song as the wind blows.

Adjacent to the singing ship is the modern Anzac Memorial Walk. The memorial and a small section of the promenade were built to commemorate the centenary of the First World War and are a busy place to visit. Beneath the large canopy are information panels about important battles and the participation of local Queenslanders.

Round dogs are welcome on the boardwalk and surrounding park, but please treat the area with the respect it deserves.

If you’re interested in history, you should also head inland to Rookhampton. It is one of the main cities of Central Queensland and has a wonderful collection of historic buildings.

Some of the important buildings worth visiting include the Custom House, the Criterion Hotel, the Rockhampton Post Office and several courts. Most of the historic buildings are along Quay Street, with the post office and courthouses a block away on East Street.

The riverbank area off Quay Street has recently been redeveloped and is a lovely place to walk along the Fitzroy River with lots of shade trees. Keep your dog on a leash only.

Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in Rockhampton’s main botanic gardens and, not surprisingly, in the adjacent free park.
