The Chesapeake Bay is the largest body of water in North America, stretching nearly 200 miles from its headwaters, where the Susquehanna River ends its journey in Havre de Grace, Maryland, to Norfolk, Virginia, where the bay meets the Atlantic. With more than 11,000 miles of coastline—more than the entire West Coast—going to the beach is a great way to enjoy the bay. But to better understand its scale, you can see it from a boat!

Finding a Chesapeake Bay boat tour isn’t as difficult as you might expect. Watermark Cruises in Annapolis and Baltimore welcomes pets on day cruises. Patriot Cruises enables good behavior. They should sit on your lap or lie on your feet, without blocking your way during the journey described by them beyond the borders of St. Michaels. Additionally, there are countless private ferries available from ports up and down the Chesapeake.
Some things to consider when choosing the option that’s right for you and your dog: Do you want a sightseeing tour or just a leisurely cruise? The time your pet will be free on board. (less waves) is needed on a boat as small as it can be filled with people and maybe a few dogs.
Talked about the trip from Annapolis and getting ready for Buster’s birthday. Unfortunately we were reminded that boats can be unpredictable when our chosen trip was cancelled! Flexibility is important when traveling with pets, so we quickly settled on another option, a day trip across the bay from Annapolis to the cute town of St. Louis. Michaels. Saturday morning we boarded the 65-foot Lady Sarah in Annapolis with about 140 other people and a pug named Zoe.
On this cruise, pets were allowed on both the open upper deck and the enclosed lower deck. We decided to be outside and chose a spot in the front corner of the ship where the boys wouldn’t get under the feet of passengers walking around. it didn’t take long for all the boys to fall asleep!

The Chesapeake cruise took over two hours and along the way we saw the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and many other boats enjoying the sun on the water. Even from this perspective, the fact that the gulf contains 18 trillion liters of water – enough to fill 50 billion bathrooms – is incomprehensible.
We entered the harbor at St. Michaels around 12:30 and we had three hours to explore before heading back. Fortunately, we were in St. Michaels last year because 3 hours is a short time to scratch around here! After a 2+ hour nap, Ty and Buster were ready to stretch their legs, so we wandered around the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, then took a walk along St. Michaels Nature Trail.
Before we knew it, it was time to head back to the beach! Ty and Buster wanted to go home, but the plan was fulfilled to call them “Captain Sun”. The boys quickly settled into their carefree lives instead of sleeping under our table.
Our return trip passed the shallow Thomas Point Lighthouse and brought us closer to the beautiful sailboats.

Although we all enjoyed the day, there are a few things I would do differently next time. First, I would prefer a narrated tour that would allow us to learn about the Chesapeake Bay in a fun way. In addition, while we worship St. Michaels is very busy on the weekends during the season. Finding shops or eating in one of the friendly courtyards – especially with our dogs with their problems – is especially difficult when it is crowded. If I were to plan this day again, I would go to St. Michaels and I take one of Patriot Cruises’ 65-75 minute Chesapeake weekday cruises. I hope what we learned will help you make your day perfect!
It was a cloudy, cold day, but we still had fun with the folks at Bark Annapolis, Paws and Possibilities, LLC, SPCA of Anne Arundel County!
