It is the most visited park in New South Wales and is spread over several different towns and districts in South Wales, including Katoomba, Blackheath, Lower Grouse Valley, Mt Wilson and Glenbrook.
Our Blue Mountains day trip focuses mainly on attractions in and around Katoomba, as this area is easily accessible from Sydney and is full of the best attractions in the park.
Here’s a list of the best things to do if you only have one day in the Blue Mountains (the list of things to do is actually much longer than what you can see in our Best Things to Do in the Blue Mountains article).
Optional things to do include the Grand Canyon Trail and the route north to Govett’s Jump Viewpoint and Pulpit Rock, but you’ll need a car and plenty of time and energy to add them to your day.
Blue Mountains Day Trip
The train journey from Sydney to Katoomba takes between 2 and 2.5 hours depending on your starting point in Sydney. Here you can find train schedules and prices.
When in the Blue Mountains, you can tour the Blue Mountains Explorer bus, which is a hop-on hop-off bus. He goes to famous places like Echo Point, Scenic World and Katoomba Township, but he doesn’t go to Wentworth Falls.
It is an hour and a half (100 km) from Sydney. Having a car gives you the advantage of visiting sights that are not accessible by public transport or tours and allows you to travel on your own schedule. We rented a car for this day trip in Sydney.
This route is written as a day trip from Sydney, so your day starts and ends in Sydney. You have the option to stay overnight in Katoomba which gives you a little more time in the Blue Mountains.
Invigorating Day Trips From Sydney
It is better to have a car for this trip. Some places listed on this route are not accessible by the Blue Mountains Explorer bus (for example, the bus does not go to Wentworth Falls). You can still follow our itinerary, but you will need to make some adjustments.
I have listed the times below, but these are just rough estimates to give you an idea of the schedule for the day. Landscape World, the place you visit first, has opening hours that vary depending on the day of the week, so it affects when you start.
The best place to start your journey is the World of Scenery. In this one and only you can ride the world’s highest railway, stand on the roof of the Skyway, ride the tallest carriage in the Southern Hemisphere and hike on hiking trails through the rainforest.
Scenic World is open 7 days a week, but hours vary depending on the day of the week. I recommend checking the opening hours on the official website for the date of your visit, as some days it opens at 9am and other days at 10am.
5 Best Blue Mountains Tours From Sydney So That You Can See It All Easily
For the best experience, plan to arrive at World View during business hours. There can be long lines to get on the lift in the mid-morning, so you can avoid these lines if you get an early start, giving you more time to visit more places in the Blue Mountains later.

3. Scenic route: From the lower station of the railway to the lower station of the scenic train on foot. This way takes 10 minutes. You have the opportunity to walk several hiking trails at the bottom of the valley.

If there are no lines during your visit, it will take about 1.5 to 2 hours to visit the scenic world.
Travel tip: If you’re visiting the Blue Mountains when Worldview opens at 10 a.m., I recommend visiting the Cliff Side Drive viewpoint between 9 and 10 a.m. to make the most of your time.
Eagle Hawk Lookout, Landslade Lookout and Cahill’s Heads and Boars Lookout are three viewpoints on Cliff Side Drive. All of them are located near the World of Scenery and it takes 30 to 45 minutes to see them all.
These are the best three viewpoints on Cliff Side Drive. This is a short and easy way to the walled viewpoint. From here you can see the Three Sisters, the Scenic World cable car and the beautiful view of the Blue Mountains. The scenic world is only 5 minutes away.
Why The Blue Mountains Are Sydney’s Best Day Trip
This is another great view of the Blue Mountains. A macadam road leads down from the parking lot to the viewpoint. Sometimes there are steep stairs to keep things interesting.
The path ends at a wide rocky ledge where a panoramic view of the park opens. There are no fences here, so watch out for small children and avoid the edges.
Cahill’s Head and Boar’s Head are two outposts located on the footpath. There is a descent to the farthest point, so you have to do a bit of work to get back to your car, but it’s worth it because it was one of my favorite views in the Blue Mountains.
The path leads to Boars Head Lookout, then to Cahill Lookout and if you continue, the third lookout is also called Cahill Lookout.

Of the three viewpoints on Cliff Side Drive, you’ll be walking more to get to Boars Head and Cahill’s Lookouts, so if you want to save time, it’s a good one to skip.
For lunch, it’s easier to go to World View. At Scenic World, dine at the Terrace Café & Bar, where you can dine with views of the Blue Mountains. Even if you’ve left Landscape World for sightseeing, you can come back for lunch (lunch at the Terrace Cafe does not require a ticket, but a ticket gives you access to Landscape World all day).
Option no. 2 – go to Katoomba, a small town that is the gateway to the Blue Mountains. In Katoomba we recommend Station Bar & Wood Fired Pizza, Basil Nut Cafe & Restaurant (Thai & Vietnamese), Little Paris Cafe & Aunty Ed’s Restaurant & Bar.
This easy-to-see viewpoint offers the best view of the Three Sisters. There’s tons of parking, it’s free to visit, and it only takes a few minutes.
A Day Trip To The Blue Mountains
There are several viewpoints from this place, so it takes about 15 minutes to enjoy the scenery and take pictures.
This is one of the best short hikes in the Blue Mountains National Park. It takes 30 to 45 minutes to hike this 1.1 km (0.7 mi) round trip trail to the Three Sisters Lookout and Honeymoon Bridge. It’s a hike on a paved trail to the viewpoint and a steep hike to Echo Point.
This is a good option for those who want to walk a little and get closer to one of the famous rocks of the Blue Mountains.
This viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the Jemison Valley. It is located at the end of a sandstone peninsula and has one of the best views of the Blue Mountains.
Blue Mountains Waterfalls And Wildlife Small Group Or Private
Spend the afternoon either hiking to Wentworth (one of the best waterfalls to see in the Blue Mountains) or hiking the Grand Canyon, often called the best hike in the Blue Mountains. Both require walking and both require a car to reach.
Wentworth Falls is a three-tiered waterfall, and the view of this waterfall is one of the best things to do in the Blue Mountains.
You’ll get decent views of the falls with Jamison Lookout and Wentworth Falls Lookout, but for the best experience, hike part or all of the Wentworth Falls loop.
