Day Trips With Dogs Brisbane

Day Trips With Dogs Brisbane – While the beaches around Brisbane aren’t as large as those on the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast, Queensland’s capital still has plenty of dog-friendly beaches to choose from for your pup’s enjoyment.

There are nine off-leash beaches along the beaches of Moreton Bay, Brisbane City and Redlands Beach. Additionally, there are four more beaches on nearby islands that are worth the extra effort to reach.

There are five dog-friendly beaches in the Moreton Bay area, north-east of Brisbane. Cross the bridge to Bribie Island and its beautiful beaches or choose from four beaches along the shore of Moreton Bay.

Best Dog-friendly Bushwalks In Brisbane

The best off-leash beaches near Brisbane are South Woorim Beach or Bribie Island Dog Beach. Between Voorim Beach and Red Beach, this beautiful stretch of golden sand stretches for 4 km of free space. And like other islands near Brisbane, Bribie Island is connected to the mainland by a bridge, making it easy to access.

The easiest way to access the open-air section of Woorim South Beach is at the end of Lowry Street in Woorim. Dogs are allowed off leash to the right of the entry point, next to the sand pumping station. This beach is technically a “surf beach”, but the surf height was only 30 cm on the day I visited. There is also a manual dog wash area next to the entry point.

Alternatively, go to Red Beach to reach Dog Beach. The water at Red Beach is safer and calmer. From the first parking lot, there are several hundred meters of clearly marked leash-only beach at the beginning before the off-leash beach section begins.

There are also two off-leash beaches on Bribie Island. At the northern end of Woorim Beach, north of the main no-dog section, dogs are allowed from the northern entrance of the northern path to the 4WD access point. Additionally, in Belara, dogs are allowed on the beach along the Sylvan Beach Esplanade between Boronia Drive and Marina Boulevard.

If you turn south from the Beribi Island access road, you will reach the peaceful countryside of Bichmer. Beachmere has two open beaches at the northern and southern ends of its long stretch of coastline. Both beaches are tidal mudflats that are best visited at low tide.

We visited South Beachmere, marked “Beachmere Offleash Dog Beach” on Google Maps. The off-leash exercise area starts at the end of Biggs Street and continues to the mouth of the Caboolture River, although dogs are not allowed in the mangrove area. There is also a comfortable grassy park next to the parking lot which is convenient for visiting at low tide.

If you head north, dogs are still allowed on the beach, but only until you reach the North Beachemer Play Area. It is located between the end of Lewis Drive and the northern end of Bayside Drive.

Further south, the next free beach in the Moreton Bay Regional Council area is Deception Bay Foreshore. Like North and South Beach, this Dog Beach is a tidal beach, best visited at low tide.

The off-leash dog beach section is between Wallin Street and Joseph Crescent, or simply search “Deception Dog Beach” on Google Maps. At the time of my visit, off-leash testing was also conducted at the beach, but only before 8am and after 4pm.

After Woorim South Beach, the next best off-leash dog beach north of Brisbane is probably Queens Beach North. This dog-friendly beach is located on the outskirts of Scarborough near Radcliffe.

On Queens Beach, north of the stairs near Griffith Road, dogs are allowed on leashes. They should live on the southern part of the coast. On busy days, it is easy to spot the range by the number of northern dogs!

Queens Beach is sandy rather than clayey like most Moreton Bay beaches. There is also a stone around the tide mark.

There are currently three off-leash dog beaches in the Brisbane City section of the beach. For maps of each area, as well as any updates on open areas, visit the Brisbane City Council website.

The northernmost dog-friendly beach in the Brisbane city area is Sandgate Foreshore. A large section of marshland on the outskirts of Sandgate and Shorncliffe has been designated as an off-leash dog exercise area.

The northern end of Off Leash Dog Beach begins near the corner of Flinders Parade and Second Street. The southern boundary is near the corner of Parade Park and Zeehan Street in Shorncliffe. There are several steps to get into the mud.

Just north of Brisbane Airport is the coastal suburb of Naji Beach, home to the Kedron Brook leash-free swimming area. The free range is next to the fenced Takeru Dog Park – search ‘Njagi Beach Dog Park’ on Google Maps.

Kedron Brook is very popular with local dog owners. On the Sunday afternoon we visited, there was also a combination coffee and dog wash van operating in the parking lot. Again, the beach is mostly muddy – don’t wear new shoes! The area beyond the dam extends to the mouth of the bay and is tidal, so it is best to visit at low tide.

Note that the off-leash dog area that was being tested near Naji Beach has been canceled and there are no plans to bring it back.

The best dog beach in the Brisbane city area is Manly Dog Beach, south of Brisbane Airport. This dog beach is much smaller and is visited at high tide and when the tide is high, but with fine sand rather than mud flats.

The beach is located near Manly Boat Harbour, between rock walls at the end of Davenport Drive, which runs along the south side of the Boat Harbour. Search for “Inspiration Point” in Manly on Google Maps.

North Of Townsville

In the Redlands City Council area, there are only two off-leash beaches on the mainland. However, there are three other excellent dog-friendly beaches on islands near the coast.

Both off-leash beaches are on the mainland of the Redlands Beach area in suburban Cleveland. My favorite option is Dog Beach at Raby Bay Foreshore Park, which has a sandy beach.

To find a section of beach near the park where dogs are allowed to paddle, Google “Robbie Bay Dog Beach” or look for signs. The dog beach isn’t that big, so it can get crowded on busy days, but it’s still a decent size.

Another place to swim your dog in Cleveland is JJ Walter Park. It’s a large fenced dog park on the other side of Cleveland Point. The easiest access point is to the north, where there is a parking lot at the end of Shore Street East, rather than going south near the ferry terminal.

There is beach access at JJ Walter Park, but it is not a good beach for dogs. The fenced park has a bank of mangroves on one side, with some access to the beach in the middle of the mangrove forest.

For more dog-friendly beaches on the Redlands Coast, visit one of the offshore islands. The easiest option to visit is Coochimudlo Island, which is a 10-minute ferry ride from Victoria Point in Amity Traders. Dogs are allowed onboard at no extra charge, without leashes.

Once you reach Cochimudo Island Pier, it’s a 5-minute walk to the seasonal stretch of the main beach on the west side of the pier. It is best to walk on the footpath behind the beach where dogs are prohibited on the sand either side of the pier. After reaching the boat ramp, the undammed section begins about 100 meters further and extends for about 200 meters to a beautiful sandy beach with clearly defined boundaries.

Note that depending on the time of year, dogs may be allowed on leash or restricted. During the winter months, from May to August, dogs are allowed to be on leash all day. From November to February, dogs are allowed after 5 pm and before 9 am. But in spring and autumn, due to the presence of migratory birds, dogs must be kept on a leash during the day.

To the south of Cochimudlo Island is Russell Island, the largest of the southern islands of Moreton Bay. It is also home to a seasonal off-leash dog beach on the southeast side of the island, adjacent to Lions Boulevard Park.

Like Dog Beach on Coochimudlo Island, Dog Beach is also closed only at certain times of the year. Between May and August, dogs are allowed on leash all day, while during the summer months between November and February, dogs are only allowed before 9am or after 5pm.

In the remaining months of the year (March, April, September, Mayhar), dogs are allowed only on a leash due to the presence of migratory sea birds.
