Down vs Down Alternatives: A Comparison Guide Down vs Down Alternatives: A Comparison Guide Which Side Are You On? I always love when blog readers ask about specific topics for blog posts. Not only does it make my job easier, but it always sparks my creativity! Recently I have been asked for recommendations on choosing a pet bed, how to care for a bed, and some specific things that I do and recommend. Great idea for a post, right?? Today I will take you to see how we have beautiful beds
), I feel like I could entertain you with lots of stories about evil animals destroying my bed! Sometimes I covered my bed with a real sheet so Georgette wouldn’t pee on my bed (
). Now that I’m the proud owner of multi-room doors, I still have a few hacks that help protect my bed from a pet.

As a former textile designer, I am fortunate to know more about what goes into making a bed, so I can confidently share with you how we combine pets and beautiful textiles! Here are some of my top tips + suggestions for dog-friendly beds:
I mention this first because I’m pretty sure we’ve all told our pets, “that’s why we can’t have nice things.” I even have a pillow that says it! But I mention adoption first because I truly believe there is a certain level of wear and tear that will ALWAYS happen when you live with pets. Pets throw up, puppies have accidents, cats take advantage of the sunshine…it just happens. Of course, you can minimize the damage, but in order to keep your sanity, I highly recommend that you accept a certain level of acceptance that things will break.
I just don’t want this post to be a list of the best bedding brands or pet products. Instead, I want to arm you with information on what to look for so you can be a smart consumer and make your own decisions! To help you get started, here’s a quick guide to popular types of beds and my thoughts on how they handle pets:
If you want linens, buy pure linen, not a blend. Hemp is the fiber that makes linen thread and makes it very strong… like three times stronger than cotton or wool! I also recommend linen as it is a fabric that will improve with age and more washing. Some sources I read while researching this post even stated that linen can last up to 12 times longer than cotton.

I personally LOVE percale sheets because they are crisp and cool to the touch – and perfect for pets. Always choose cotton bedding that is tightly woven. I recommend this because pet hair and nails are less likely to stick to finer, tighter woven fabrics. Percale usually has a tighter weave than satin, so if you’re worried, go for it.
Absolutely the worst pet fabric! Just kidding, sort of…but velvet acts like a pet magnet. There’s a reason why brush bristles are made of velvet! I think I have friends who like velvet upholstery because they can easily comb out pet hair.
If you are concerned about pet hair, consider a fabric that is able to remove fur such as silk or satin. I don’t like slippery beds because that’s not my style, but every person’s style! Silk and satin have disadvantages due to the price and long maintenance of the fabric.
I can’t tell you how many times Georgette peed on my bed. It’s embarrassing to admit, but he did it when he did it

. A few years ago a memory foam mattress broke and I have been using a waterproof mattress ever since. I know it’s annoying and might affect the mattress’s ability to breathe, but at the end of the day I don’t want to deal with cat pee seeping into my bed.
I absolutely LOVE the fur comforter. For me it’s like sleeping under a cloud. But with our pets this proved unsuccessful. I’m tired of taking my blankets to the dry cleaner and paying a lot of money if someone is sick (
) on. After another cat pee incident that ruined our blanket, I vowed to only have alternative bedding in the future because it’s machine washable. I made the switch about 5 years ago and the results have been great. This is one of my top tips when it comes to pet beds!
My biggest recommendation is to only choose bedding that is machine washable. This does not include decorative pillows. If you own a home, research the load capacity of your machine. If you are a renter, I recommend going to the dry cleaners on a schedule to have your textiles bulk cleaned in their large machines. Depending on how many sheets you have, a visit to the dry cleaners can be most efficient because you can use several machines at the same time. And don’t be afraid to dry your textiles in the open air, even if it takes longer. Don’t forget: the heat of the dryer can shorten the life of your textiles!

Taking proper care of your bedding and textiles is the best way to get the most out of your investment. Since our two dogs sleep in bed with us, I removed our bed (
) once a week and wash everything except the blanket. Sheets, pillows, duvets, comforters… all are washable. While things were being washed, I took the time to assemble the pillows and blankets. I wash the blanket myself every three months. Always read the care instructions for all your textiles and bedding!
Some people have mentioned that when the bed was rebuilt, they put a layer on top that acts as a protective layer, especially for pet hair. You can totally go this route, but I can’t. Instead, I always use machine washable fabrics like linen and cotton.
Between washes, I refresh the sheets with a pillowcase so everything smells fresh. I also sleep really well and have a lot of night sweats so that helps
