Best Dog Friendly Restaurants Edinburgh – We are often asked, “Is Edinburgh dog friendly?” they listen. Edinburgh is a truly dog-friendly city. Because we travel so often, my son and I have little time to explore Scotland’s capital. I couldn’t wait for the weekend, so when Hotel Indigo invited me to their York Place boutique hotel, I jumped at the chance.

The hotel is located in the heart of New Town, surrounded by Georgian townhouses. Shops, restaurants, bars, attractions and parks are all within close proximity to the hotel. It is a short walk from Edinburgh’s main train station. The airport tram stops outside, making it a convenient base for exploring Edinburgh.

Hotel Indigo has 60 rooms ranging from comfortable double rooms to luxury rooms. Guests have access to the gym, bar and breakfast. There is no restaurant at the hotel, but there are plenty right in front of you so that’s not a problem.

Our modern king room was spacious. There was a large bed and living area, and a small bar (with free snacks).

After checking out of the hotel, we traded Georgian architecture for the grand residential architecture of the Old Town, the medieval heart of the city.

Our tour of the Old Town took us to Blair Street near Cowgate. One of our favorite canine friends in Edinburgh is on Blair Street so it was the perfect time to stop by for dinner.

City Cafe is an American-style diner that has been serving hot dogs, burgers and milkshakes to the people of Edinburgh since the early ’80s.

We were able to choose a table inside and headed to a 1950s jukebox stand. The music was great and the food and drinks on the menu were even better.

We both ordered ice cream, I ordered a cherry coke and Mr. G ordered a regular coke. Since it was Friday, I ordered an alcoholic drink. I had a pina colada and Mr. G had a light beer.

For dinner, we had grilled beef with lots of chili, cheese, and jalapeños. It was amazing. Mr. G had macaroni and cheese and fries and was equally happy with his selection.

After lunch, we walked along the Royal Mile to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The castle is Scotland’s official royal residence and was once the home of Mary, Queen of Scots.

The Old Town walk from Holyrood passed through New Carlton Cemetery. Georgia’s Georgian Cemetery has a guard tower built to deter body snatchers. Many graves are decorated with skulls and bones.

Now it’s time to relax. The boy curled up in his dog bed while Mr. G and I sat in our comfortable king size bed and watched TV.

The next morning we woke up, took a shower and got ready for the next day. The sun was shining and we were looking forward to spending the day walking around the city with the boys, which was first thing in the morning.

I didn’t realize how good the breakfast would be since it’s a hotel without a restaurant, but I was pleasantly surprised. We offer a wide range of breakfast options including cooked and continental breakfasts.

The first place we visited was St. James Quarters, just outside the hotel. In the summer of 2021, the gallery opened to much fanfare, replacing his 1960s landmark. The new gallery has attracted many of Edinburgh’s high-end shops and restaurants in the east end.

The Galleria is dog-friendly, so if your four-legged friend isn’t going shopping, there are dog walkers and walkers everywhere. Some shops and caterers allow dogs, including the UK’s John Lewis, which we visited.

Inside, the boy went to the dog store. She had Barbour and Jules toys, games, and fancy clothes.

After browsing, she chose a sweater and a toy from her Barbour series. Her little face was a picture of us as we walked to the register to buy sweets.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery is just around the corner from Hotel Indigo. It was one of my favorite places in Edinburgh when I was a student, but it’s been a few years since I last visited. I had the wonderful opportunity to visit this gallery a long time ago as it was just around the corner.

Dogs are not allowed in the gallery, but there is a green space next to it, so me and another boy stood in line soaking up the early autumn sunshine.

After art, there’s coffee. Tucked away on Edinburgh’s trendy George Street, Bar & Co is a trendy cafe that welcomes people and food.

A hop and a jump away from the hustle and bustle of George Street, we arrived at the green oasis known as Princes Street Gardens. We stopped for a moment to listen to a wonderful street performer con te partiro (goodbye time) in beautiful Italian. Afterwards, we headed to the West Garden and took a walk around the West Garden.

The West Garden holds fond memories from my childhood: a children’s play area, a beautiful fountain, and a cocoa flower clock. We arrived in good time as the birds were just about to appear. The famous “Cocoa, Cocoa” bird took me back to the glorious days of my childhood.

After leaving the Princes Street gardens, we returned to the hustle and bustle of the city, the historic Old Town. It’s my favorite place when I’m at home.

There we listened to the second street performer of the day. Bagpipe players performed on foot at the intersection of High Street and Lawnmarket, directly opposite where his partner William Hare King was hanged for his crime after evidence. The crime he committed in exchange for his freedom.

Despite its gray exterior, the interior of the cathedral is an architectural gem, thanks to its Victorian stonework, and is well worth a visit.

The high street near St Giles Cathedral was packed with tourists so it seemed like the perfect time for a break. We walked down the stairs to Cockburn Street (which is said to be on fire together) and Freshmarket Close (which isn’t as scary as it sounds).

Jinglin’ Geordie’s Bar is Edinburgh’s most dog-friendly bar. It was named after James VI’s jeweler, George Herriot. Herriot was so wealthy that his pockets were full of gold.
