Dog Friendly Tropical Vacations

Dog Friendly Tropical Vacations

Dog Friendly Tropical Vacations – Aruba is one of the few Caribbean destinations that actively promotes pet travel, so when I was looking for a luxury vacation with my chihuahua puppy, I decided it was time to check out One Happy: What the Island is Really Like dog-friendly. Turns out it’s Aruba.

(a local word for dessert, among other meanings) alluding to Mother’s Day and Puppy Day. From hotels to restaurants to activity options, this Dutch Caribbean island aims to be one happy dog too.

However, by dogs I mean dogs weighing less than 25 pounds. Most hotels have weight restrictions, and unless your dog is a service animal, you won’t even be able to fly with your dog in the cabin. Poppy is a psychiatric service animal trained to help me with debilitating panic attacks, but for the purposes of this trip we made sure to only visit places where the animals weren’t strays.

Just 15 miles off the coast of Venezuela and outside the hurricane belt, the rainy season in Aruba is not as intense as in the Caribbean. The island receives only 15 inches of rain per year (less than the Caribbean), making it ideal for year-round visits. The temperature is also beautiful.

As a working dog, Poppy expects pampering when on vacation, and that’s exactly what the Ritz-Carlton Aruba offers. The five-star resort enjoys a prime location in Palm Beach and accepts puppies for a one-off fee of £20. The ambience of this Ritz is luxurious, as you would expect, but also comfortable.

There are two pools on the beach and you can book cabanas for the day. The Ritz also has teeny-tiny puppy booths for your little one. Poppy tried one but chose to share the very comfortable lounger in my cabin. Here we ordered lunch (a chicken bowl for him, a fish taco for me) and then went swimming.

Poppy is a decent swimmer, but she’s not a fan of waves hitting her ears. She absolutely loved the Caribbean here because the water is warm, shallow and incredibly calm. After paddling on the ocean, she ran up and down the sugar white beach.

The Ritz-Carlton Aruba also offers a room service menu for dogs, and one morning Poppy enjoyed a combination of sausage, rice and vegetables for breakfast. Other highlights included sitting poolside and punching other guests who insisted on buying her snacks, much to her delight.

Moving to Aruba with your dog doesn’t mean staying on the property all the time. Dogs are welcome in the courtyards of many restaurants on the island and we ate inside the hotel most evenings. Poppy’s favorite meal was at Hadikori restaurant. On the sand between Marriott’s Surf Club and Mo Emba Beach, this relaxing spot has gaming tables on the sand. There is no dog menu, but they will happily prepare anything from the human menu for your dog and leave out the condiments. Poppy had the filet mignon, cooked rare, which she devoured every morsel.

Culture Cafe, in the San Nicolas (or Sant Nicolas in Dutch) neighborhood on the southeastern tip of Aruba, is another locally owned, dog-friendly restaurant and serves delicious coffee, breakfast, salads, wraps, and vegetarian dishes are also served. Poppy enjoyed her bowl of bacon and sausage.

For off-site activities, she strolls the San Nicolas neighborhood, filled with more than 50 murals and art installations. While you can tour on your own, a tour with Aruba Mural Tours is the best way to fully appreciate and understand the art. It is run by Tito, a philanthropist passionate about making Aruba an arts destination. The tour lasts about two hours and traces the history of the island’s art. These are super dog friendly and make great photo ops. The Tattoo also hosts dog-friendly art dinners in the gallery space.

Find The Best Dog-friendly Beaches In The Usa

If your dog enjoys beach time, visit Baby Beach while in San Nicolas. The beach has very shallow and calm turquoise waters, making it easy for shy swimmers to feel safe. It’s popular with locals and less crowded than Palm Beach. It also has good swimming and snorkeling for people.

With a little advance planning, moving your small dog from the United States to Aruba is easy. To enter Aruba, your dog will need an international health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian within two weeks of departing for Aruba. Your dog must be microchipped and have a valid rabies vaccine. Your veterinarian will perform a physical exam of your dog and complete and sign an Aruba International Health Certificate.

The signed form must then be sent to the USDA veterinarian’s office in the region where your state is located. The office will then approve the form and return it to you before departure. This certificate is only valid for 14 days from the date it is issued by an official USDA veterinarian and it may take up to a week for the USDA veterinarian to process the certificate, so plan accordingly.

After returning the approved form, you must email a copy to [email protected] in Aruba. This office will stamp the form and send it back. I received my form within about 24 hours. You must bring a stamped copy of the health certificate with you to the airport.

Your airline will check the form before boarding and you will also show it to the customs officer at the airport. After going through immigration and collecting your luggage, you will need to wait in line at customs to “declare your items”. Here you will see the form.
