Best Dog Friendly Walks Blue Mountains – Whatever type of walk you want to take your dog, there are plenty of dog friendly walks on the NSW Central Coast. Take advantage of these dog-friendly hikes, from bushwalking in state forests and dog sanctuaries to easy dog walks along beaches and lakes.
There are many national parks and lovely walks along the Putini coast, but these are dog-free. However, for dog-friendly forest walks on the North Shore, I recommend visiting Strickland State Forest.

Dogs will love visiting this state forest 10 minutes north of Gosford. Until recently, dogs were required to be kept under your control in state forests, so they were allowed to be on leashes. However, the latest guidelines state that dogs must be on a leash and under your control.
A Dog Friendly Guide To Snowdonia
One of the most popular hiking trails is the Arboretum Trail. The 2.3km dog walk takes you through one of Australia’s oldest arboretums, a collection of native and exotic trees including Australian red cedars, Bunya pines and hops. On the way we cross a beautiful bridge again.
This hiking trail is relatively easy, but it can be very muddy after rain, and strains can be a problem when wet. For a longer hike, you can take the 1.3km Bellbird Trail and hike this trail for 3.6km. The trailhead starts at the lower Stony Creek parking lot.
Strickland State Forest has several hiking trails, most of which are about 2 km long, but can be combined for longer hikes. Another popular short hike through the forest is Strickland Falls.
This walk starts from the car park at the Banksia picnic area at the top of the forest. As you descend the falls, travel through a variety of terrain, from rock forests to valley rainforest. Note that this trail is rated easy because it is rough.
Dog Walks In Northumberland
The last road to the state forest is not closed. It’s usually fine for 2WD vehicles, but after heavy rain I suggest going down the slope to the bottom of the Stoney Creek parking lot. However, the parking area at the Banksia Picnic Area, where this walk starts, is reached via a relatively flat 1.5km road that is not exposed to the rain.
You don’t have to go to a state forest on the north coast to enjoy a walk in the woods with your dog. A great but easy way to get to Norah Head is the Norah Head Nature Walk.
This walk can be started from two car parks – the Norah Head Lighthouse car park which is very busy at the end of the day or the larger car park near Bush Street Nature Reserve on the other side. Dogs are requested to be kept on a leash.
The 800m trail is an easy to follow trail with signs pointing out the different plant species and their importance. There are also two whale watching sites along the route – one in the middle of the road and the other at Bush Street Sanctuary.
Dog-friendly Places In The Peak District
Traditionally, the walk ends with a walk along the beach and rocky cliffs to Norah Head Lighthouse. However, dogs are not allowed on the North Sea beaches unless marked as no beach and I saw a no dogs sign on the main beach at Norah Head. Instead, I recommend following your example.
However, whichever leg of the nature trail you start from, I recommend extending the walk by continuing on to Norah Head Lighthouse. This bright white structure has a beautiful appearance and the interior area offers good views of the coast. It is a 300 meter walk in each direction to the end of the reserve.
A popular long walk around the inlet is the Shore to Lake Walk. The 7.6km walking trail lives up to its name as it crosses the coastline and Lake Tuggerah, crossing the peninsula to join it.
If dogs are not allowed in section 2 and section 3 is not fun, I suggest walking the trail with the dog so you can just walk sections 1 and 4 and return the same way. This dog walk is 3.8 km each way and takes approximately 2.5 hours return. There are signs and maps along the way.

Until 2020, the pelicans will be fed daily at 3:30 p.m. on the boardwalk near Memorial Park. A new nature experience is developing, but you will still see many pelicans gathering each evening at feeding time. You must keep your dog on a leash on the course to protect it from the pelicans.
The suburb of Long Jetty takes its name from the long embankment that flows from the town into Lake Tuggerah. The pier, originally built in 1914 but rebuilt after a hurricane in 1927, overlooks the city.
The Long Channel is one of three channels in this section of Lake Tuggerah, but the longest is 1,152 feet or 351 meters. Besides a walk from the beach to the lake or a private walk, this is a fun place to walk your dog. It would have been nice if there was no westerly wind the day we visited!
Parking is easy and there are picnic shelters and sunbathing areas along the long canal. There is also a toilet block covered in an interesting photo of the history of the ship and the surrounding area.

In 2021, a 200m scenic walk was completed linking Terrigal Beach with Terrigal Haven at the foot of the cliff. Fortunately, dogs are allowed on a walk that links parts of Terrigal’s dog-friendly coastal walk.
Start from anywhere on Terrigal Beach – for example, walk from the northern end of the Esplanade, opposite Painters Lane. Follow the boardwalk to the Boardwalk and around the rocks to the Haven.
Walk around Terrigal Haven on the path past the boat and rope. A large section of grass on the hillside is designated as an off-lease dog park so you can leave your dog on a leash. Just be aware of unfenced areas and nearby parking lots.
If you don’t want to improve the skill, I suggest you stop seeing the opposite. Otherwise, follow the path past the parked cars (with your dog on a lead) and up the stairs to Scilion. It’s quite a climb, but the view from the top is amazing. See migrating whales.

Then retrace your steps to Terrigal Beach. This route can start or finish from Terrigal Haven or Scillion where there is plenty of parking which makes parking easy.
One of the best dog friendly beaches downtown is between Copacabana Beach and McMaster Beach. This long stretch of sand is a great place to walk your dog.
The beach section begins in the middle of Copacabana Beach, south of the protected section, across from the entrance at 230 Del Monte Place. Then head south towards the center near McMasters Beach, again stopping in front of the reserved lot.
The outer part of the beach is 750 meters long and has plenty of walking and is the best of all the restrictions. Between the two beaches is the mouth of the Cochron Lagoon. Dogs love to walk by the river, but be careful not to get dirty after the rain. Also dogs are not allowed in the area around the hut away from the beach.

Another state forest with hiking trails near the North Shore is Olney State Forest. Turn off the main road at Morrisett, about 40 minutes north-northeast of Tuggerah.
This state forest has closed access roads that are generally well maintained and suitable for 2WD vehicles. However, if you have a 2WD vehicle, skip it after heavy rain or if you don’t like driving on closed roads.
A dog-friendly forest walk is the Pines Walk. The trail starts at the Pines Picnic Area (not the nearby Pines Campground). The 1.7km trail follows Dora Creek, passing through pockets of moist eucalyptus and rainforest and passing through a beautiful rock pool. It takes about 45 minutes on foot.
Please note that the nearby Abbotts Falls Trail is not very dog friendly as part of the trail goes from German Point Road into Watagans National Park and dogs are not allowed
