One such example is the Rainfield Ornamental Drive, which passes through an arboretum with a deer sanctuary nearby.

Leafy Highgate Woods allow you to escape to the countryside a little without leaving the city. It’s 28 hectares of forest and ancient trees between East Finchley and – yes, you guessed it – Highgate, and in spring, it blooms a beautiful shade of purple thanks to the bluebells found here. Keeping with the woodland theme here, but this time with a much wider area in Essex, Epping Forest is a vast area of over 1,500 acres of woodland, lakes, rivers, small bridges and many historic sites. It’s London’s largest open space and a real dream for dogs. Here are nine routes – all of different lengths – so there’s plenty to choose from for you and your four-legged friend.
The famous Regent’s Canal, completed in 1820, links Paddington with Limehouse and the Liffey crosses Little Venice, passing through Camden to Victoria Park and Mile End. Towpaths run the entire length of the canal, leading to many hidden gems including dog food and plenty of pubs. We recommend leading here if your dog likes to chase birds – there are plenty of ducks, ducks and even swans along the way.

The long, nearly 16-mile route takes you from Limehouse Basin along the River Lea to Waltham Crossing – who’s an Adele fan? – Pass Hackney Marshes, Waltham Abbey, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and more. I have to say the author loves this London dog walk – but it’s my hometown so I’m biased. However, it’s a great place to run free with a dog, as long as they’re well-trained on the roads and *ahem* South East London traffic. Otherwise, it’s best to keep them in one direction here. Get off at Elverson Road or Blackheath train station and take an old-fashioned loop around Blackheath, enjoying views of Canary Wharf and the city’s skyscrapers as you go.
