ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Starting Nov. 1, residents will be allowed to take their dogs on a small portion of Ormond Beach as part of a pilot program.

The Volusia County Council voted 6 to one Tuesday to approve an 18-month pilot program to allow dogs on the 0.6-mile beach. Many people in northeast Volusia who want a dog beach without having to drive south to Ponce Cove, the only place where dogs are currently allowed, are speaking out.

“We have more than 50 hotels that advertise welcoming dogs, more than 20 restaurants,” said Nany Lohman, a local philanthropist. “We have forty-seven miles of beach and all we’re looking for is a little something.”
“We spend a lot of money traveling across the country to other dog beaches and I want to take that money and spend it here in Volusia,” said resident Leslie Lee.
It comes with rules: people must clean up after their pets, dogs must not enter the sand or disturb wildlife, must be on a 6-foot leash, and must have proof of rabies vaccination.
Other residents in the area are also concerned. Some people doubt that there are enough measures to clean up, fruit and animal problems.

“You can never penalize people to replace them. $150 to $250 won’t matter if they’re out of town they won’t pay. They’re going to leave,” said resident Laura Rutledge.
“Remember, you don’t want a good dog owner to be punished for the crimes of a few people,” said resident Randy Fernandez.
The county is still deciding whether to appoint a permanent animal control officer there or hire a Volusia representative. These decisions will be made in the coming months. I have been asked many times about how I started CrossFit. How did I start, do I have prior exercise experience, do I go often, do I have before and after photos, etc.
I have known the general concept of CrossFit for a while. I have a few friends from college who are religious. However, I didn’t try it until earlier this year because I was lazy, too old for yoga, and afraid of “looking stupid” in front of a lot of people. During the holidays last year, I could predict my next five activities in exercise classes and makeup and sweat (that’s when you know it’s time for a change). It’s not a challenge anymore and I’m frustrated. I want to get fit and gain weight (lose 100lbs!!) but not fat.

You don’t have a great story about losing XX pounds from CrossFit. In fact, it’s the opposite. My story is about gaining almost 15 pounds thanks to CrossFit and going from skinny, fat, and really, really skinny. (Note to all white Asians who want to be “fat”: it’s not because they eat junk food). I was always young and I was always weak. During my senior year of college, I was diagnosed with an illness that caused me to cook at an insane rate (not a blessing, really). No matter how much I eat, I lose weight quickly. I am sick all the time, and I will be sick for a long time. I know that daily exercise does wonders for health. My active son rarely gets sick, despite being surrounded by sick, and healthy people. So, as the new year approaches, I decided to try CrossFit with the goal of getting stronger and healthier. I took my first CrossFit class at Fitness Gone Bad in Hawaii, at 88 pounds.
Not really. I started CrossFit about 8 months after I graduated college. I struggled at CMU due to lack of sleep. I eat like ramen, dino, free food, and lots of ice cream and absolutely no exercise, unless you count walking to class. Anyway, I was a cheerleader in high school and loved hiking with my dad and Desi. I started taking Yogalates (yoga + pilates) with more Ashtanga intensity in September 2010, and those exercise classes are at GloboGym regularly. It was very difficult for the first few months, but I got used to it.
After my first class while on vacation at Fitness Gone Bad, I was sold on CrossFit and wanted to continue in the Bay Area. I googled all the crap about CrossFit gyms nearby and decided to sign up for Jason Khalipa’s box: CrossFit Santa Clara / Mount View, because of the two gyms (Santa Clara close to work, Mountain View close to home) and Jason’s background. When I first got into Jason’s box, I couldn’t pull up (I’m used to very thick green rubber) and pressing 33# was very difficult. I can do pushups, lunges and high sets of feet to the bar and knees to elbows. All my movements are “slow and smooth.” I have a really hard time with the oly lifts, especially the bar and hips and moving fast. I’m still a work in progress, but it’s not bad. Jason yelled at me for being too nice and too thoughtful. I was also very worried at first because of the situation in the community and working with the sports group. It quickly disappeared after my first class at CrossFit Santa Clara (10/01/11) when I realized that everyone was there to encourage and support each other. So the community is one of my favorite parts of CrossFit!
I started by going 2-3 times a week, while going 4-5 times a week And sometimes in those gyms. I was skeptical at first. I’m afraid I’ll gain too much “fat” or muscle by lifting weights. I expressed concern and investigated. Women, we often can’t get “BIG” (note: check out this great article about women and muscle). However, I got back on track, and in no time, my weekly CrossFit participation quickly increased to 5 times a week in early February. At that time, I stopped going to those gyms, but continued with Yoga. I was very active in yoga until May, when my participation quickly dropped to zero. I haven’t done yoga in almost 3 months. I will try to go back to it because I think it helps a lot with recovery and some games. I now train CrossFit six times a week, Monday – Saturday. Good thing CrossFit Mountain View is closed on Sundays or I wouldn’t be going on the day off!

6. January 1, 2011 My first CrossFit class at Fitness Gone Bad – the chalk fun started right away. 88 lbs.
March 7, 2011, 3 months – I remember last month trying to convince my teacher that 100 # deadlifts were too hard, lol. 95 lbs.
September 9, 2011, 9 months – I have gained almost 15 pounds since CrossFit. I lift heavy. I look like a girl and I’m not big (see women and muscles). 100-103 lbs.

That’s how I started and that’s how I’ll continue! I did physical activities that I thought I would never be able to do. I made a full recovery and cut down on my recovery time from the attack. Worry that in half. I haven’t been sick since starting CrossFit. I am now in the best and healthiest condition of my life. And the best thing is that I have a lot of fun!
