Things To Do Near Me That Are Dog Friendly – St Ives is one of the most popular places to visit in Cornwall. More than 250,000 people flocked to the picturesque port city in 2019/20. It is famous for its art galleries, including the Tate and Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden, and has been a source of inspiration for artists including the ceramicists Bernard Leach, Ben Nicholson and Ben Wallis. Luckily, St Ives has plenty of dog-friendly activities, whether you’re just visiting for the day or staying at one of the town’s many beach cottages.
St Ives can be quite chaotic in the summer as it is the most popular time to visit. This can be difficult for dogs (and their owners!), so you might want to consider visiting when it’s a little quieter. We love nothing more than wandering the cobbled streets in winter, enjoying the twinkling Christmas lights and enjoying a quiet meal by the harbour. Cornwall’s Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) was updated in 2020, making most beaches dog friendly in the evenings all year round. From May to September there are still seasonal restrictions in place between 10am and 6pm which apply to most St Ives beaches. The only exception is the tidal beach at Bamaluza, but it can only be reached at low tide.

For dogs who like more space to run and play, Portkidney Sands is a 10-minute drive away. Here you can even follow the South West Coast Path from St Ives. This is a beautiful, fairly smooth descent to sandy beaches. Fun fact: Portkidney is the only beach in all of Cornwall where Woody will play with us!
If you’re looking for a quieter place away from other dogs, I recommend booking a secure dog-friendly place at the Natural Cornish Pet Hotel in nearby St Erth. The 6 foot high chain link fence is well maintained and checked regularly for holes. The safe zone even has a small forest, running water and a recreation area. This way you can enjoy a cup of coffee while your dog is safely out for a walk.
Like many seaside towns, St Ives is an ideal base for day trips along the South West Coast Path. The course is stunning but technically challenging and heads west towards Zenora and the Penwith Heritage coast. If you go this route, you’ll definitely need the right hiking boots! Alternatively, if you’re heading to Botallack, the road will be smoother, with the added bonus of the old mining architecture dotted along the coast.
The Geevor tin mine at Pendine was the last mine to operate in the St Just mining district. When the plant closed in 1990, it was producing more than 50,000 tons of black sheet metal. The place is now a heritage museum and tourist attraction. Dogs are welcome throughout the area (except the underground mines!) and it’s a great day out for the whole family. Ideal location for a few days in Penzance including St Ives, Mt St Michaels, Land’s End and Porthleven for further adventures.

Their St Ives restaurant is located on the harbor and offers a selection of award-winning burgers, craft beers and cocktails. A trip to St Ives wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Willie Waller’s Ice Cream Factory. There are over 30 extravagant flavors to choose from, and I don’t even get started on the toppings. Be careful around seagulls: they have been known to bite or steal an entire cone if you’re not careful!
For a snack on the go, look no further than a good old-fashioned Cornish pasty. St Ives Bakery is tucked away on the cobbled streets of Fore Street. This independent, family-run bakery sells handmade breads, cakes and, of course, cakes.

Obviously, one of the best free things to do with your dog is to explore one of London’s many parks. We won’t list them all, but here are a few favorites to fill your weekend…
(1-8) Royal Parks. A walk through one (or all) of London’s Royal Parks should be on every Londoner’s bucket list.
