Dog Friendly Vacations In Upstate Ny

Dog Friendly Vacations In Upstate Ny – Like many busy pet parents, I like to make time to take my dog Zoe on dog-friendly adventures. Growing up in an outdoorsy family, my childhood was filled with hikes and road trips. I wanted to relive some of those memories with my furry baby. So when I was offered a weekend getaway by the cabin rental company Getaway, I was already halfway through my hiking boots!

I’ve heard of people traveling to upstate New York, but I’ve never seen one. That all changed in the spring of 2019 when I had the opportunity to stay at The Getaway’s Cabins on Cat Mountain.

Getaway offers dog-friendly homes within driving distance of New York City, Boston, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Portland, Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Soon, Getaway will also offer cabins around Los Angeles and Dallas. You can enjoy a comfortable trip with your dog without worrying about whether your accommodation is pet-friendly or not. There is also an outdoor space for dogs to play and a small town waiting to be explored.

With my colleague Danielle and her dog Sawyer, we arranged our off hours, broke the “always” mentality and focused on the scenic views and fresh mountain air in the north.

We started our journey to the cabin on Friday morning. It was more comfortable than when I went to the office on a Friday morning.

As we drove 120 beautiful miles north through the fog, the car’s soundtrack played and fresh air poured in through the car windows. The dogs enjoyed sleeping in the back seat and Zoe even made her d out of my coat.

Calming snacks can definitely help anxious four-legged travelers, and keep them handy, especially on long drives. We would have brought Zoe’s d with us when I went north.

Once we arrived at our dog-friendly cabin, the dogs were even more interested in exploring, and we led them around the property (or so we say they led us) before heading to our cozy little apartment. .

We were amazed by the smell of fresh wood as we entered each room, and beautiful bay windows lit up the entire space. A queen size bed with freshly laundered sheets and a small bag kit and souvenirs welcomed us to make our home for the next few days.

There was a small kitchen with all cooking utensils, a small pantry for snacks and a private bathroom with shampoo, conditioner and body wash.

After dropping off our bags (see what we packed for the trip here), we hopped in the car and headed north to Albany, New York for a cup of coffee and an early lunch. We hadn’t originally planned to visit Albania, but since we had never been there and it was so close, our inner explorers convinced us to visit the country’s capital.

After grabbing a quick coffee at a local dog-friendly coffee shop, Stacks Espresso Bar, we explored the city on foot, with a variety of tea, coffee, pastries and even milk options.

Many of Albania’s restaurants, shops and cafes welcome well-behaved dogs on a leash, and we had plenty of places to explore in this beautiful capital! We walked down historic Lark Street, where the old shops and brownstones reminded me of New York City. Then we went to the landmark building of the New York State Department of Education which opened in 1912. I didn’t have a chance to go inside the building, but the 90 feet tall marble columns guided me. The dogs enjoyed playing with us in the nearby grassy park before we headed to the Iron Gate Cafe for lunch.

1890s Holroyd Hall next to Brownstone Iron Gate offers fresh food and vegetarian options along with a cute, dog-friendly patio. It was a great dining experience with two healthy dogs, but can be a bit more difficult for larger or noisy dogs as customers have to walk through the outside seating to enter the restaurant.

I ordered the Vermonster sandwich, a turkey sandwich with cheddar cheese, applesauce, scallions and celery nuts, and Danielle’s Buddha bowl made with roasted sweet potatoes, avocado, spinach, broccoli, quinoa and tofu. We got there halfway through lunch before it started to rain.

We packed up the food, grabbed the dogs and tried to get to the car before the rain started. Pet care isn’t perfect, but it makes for perfect moments. We finished our meal before heading back south in the cramped car, laughing at the puppies’ muddy feet and matching heads.

Fortunately the spring rain stopped for a short time and within an hour the rain was upon us. So we continued with our plan to explore Caiterskell Falls.

The second way to get to Kaaterskill Falls is on foot. This is a moderately easy, dog-friendly hike that takes about 2 hours.

We parked in the NY-23A parking lot next to the hiking trail. A small waterfall at the top served as a glimpse of the humble and wonderful sights we were about to see. Although steep and rocky in parts, the 2.5 mile hike is worth the visit. The highest two-tiered waterfall in the state marked the end of the trail, giving us a chance to rest and enjoy our accomplishments.

Zoe and Sawyer were absolute troopers. I recommend this hike for pet parents with dogs who are used to exploring the outdoors. However, small dogs’ paws can slip or get caught between some stones. If you go, bring plenty of extra water for your four-legged travelers and give them time to catch their breath (and yours!) along the way.

After our hike, we headed to the nearby (cash only) Chinese restaurant, Fortune Park, to pick up food to take back to our cabin. We fed the dogs ourselves before dinner. Sweet and spicy chicken and Dr. Pepper has never been a more satisfying combination.

After eating our fill, we lit a campfire to enjoy the treats that awaited us when we arrived at the cabin. Even well-meaning children must be kept at a short distance to prevent them from wandering too close to the fire. . Before we knew it, it was late and it was time for us and our dogs to retire to the cabin for a well deserved sleep.

The next morning, when I woke up to the big window looking out at the pine trees, it was like a breath of fresh air compared to the familiar sights (and blaring alarm clocks)! Zoe spent her time curling up from a soft blanket while I prepared a quick and easy DIY trail mix bar for tea and prepared for today’s walk.

While there were snacks in the cabin fridge, we all went for a walk around the cabin to enjoy the view and the tranquility. The walk was very quiet and peaceful, with excited grunts and the sound of dogs’ paws filling the air. We didn’t see many other people along the road near the cabin, but a few fellow guests from far away had their furry four-legged family members move into their home-away-from-home for the weekend. We accompanied and waved to the dog parents before heading back to the cabin to get ready for the day.

After packing our trail bars and packing our hiking bags, we headed out for breakfast. At the suggestion of Getaway, we went to Circle W to enjoy fresh food and drinks.

This quaint town has a small outdoor seating area perfect for furry adventurers, and sweet and savory treats are the perfect way to start the day. We enjoyed fried turkey panini, waffles and avocado rolls with cold brew, lemon juice, orange juice and masquerading lattes.

Before I adopted Zoe in 2017, I had often heard that poodles are generally not the most athletic dogs, and that their short muzzles can tire them out easily. Oh my god, did my bum prove them wrong? Always two steps ahead of me, figuratively or figuratively, Zoe leads four backpackers on a five-mile loop of the mountain in sight.

Dog-friendly Cabin Getaway: Escape From New York City

Although there are fewer stone and gravel paths than Caitherskell Falls, the climb to the top of the overlook is a bit more challenging. We had to brace ourselves to endure the steady incline, but the crisp air and dense fog filled us with confusion and curiosity. Your interest will not be disappointed!
