Although the Midwest region of the United States is mostly flat, it has other landforms that vary in elevation. You will see hills, towering mountains, plains, plateaus and large lakes. In addition to the natural beauty, there are plenty of history lessons for you and your dog!

Rich in history and the childhood home of Abraham Lincoln, Lincoln State Park has over 10 miles of hiking trails, rolling hills and two lakes. Dogs can explore this state park with you. You can see the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, a pioneer farm, the Lincoln House, the grave of Abraham Lincoln’s mother, and the historic Trail of Twelve Stones. Want to stay all day? You can camp at this state park! This is a great place to spend the night.
If the covered bridges remind you of the famous movie, you know why this Iowa county is such a unique travel destination. Your dog can join you on the many covered bridges in this area of Iowa. Madison County is the covered bridge capital of Iowa. This county is home to the largest group of covered bridges in one area! Since there are many bridges accessible by dirt roads, leave your van at the campsite while you explore.
In six-odd years of traveling in RVs with pets, I remember the place that surprised me the most was taking apart the Chalk Pyramids in Kansas. Not many travelers know about this place, but now the secret is out! On the western edge of Gove County, Kansas is Monument Rocks. It is a series of large chalk monoliths called the Chalk Pyramids. Dogs are allowed on a leash and you will feel like you are on another planet. It is truly a unique experience.

We from Florida love to spend time at the beach! But after visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake with Brickle and Digby, I can understand lake life! Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore has miles of sandy beaches and bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan. As with many places, there are beaches where dogs are not allowed, so ask the friendly park staff, pick up a map, or search online. We found that there were more places to visit on this beautiful shore of Lakes Brickle and Digby than we expected. But be aware that dogs are not allowed on the dunes for safety reasons.
Your dog will feel as high as Paul Bunyan when you pick him up in Bemidji, Minnesota! This was such a fun stop for us on our travels. Check out the giant statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox for a great photo opportunity. This roadside landmark has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1988. Built in 1937, Paul Bunyan and his Blue Bull stand on the shores of Lake Bemidji next to the Visitor Center. After you’ve taken the best photos of your dog, head to nearby Itasca Park. Here you can see the headwaters of the Mississippi River, go hiking and have a picnic!
Indian Cave State Park, named for the park’s large sandstone cave, is bordered by the mighty Missouri River. Your dog will thank you for bringing him here to camp, picnic, and hike on over 22 miles of trails! Native American Cave is the main geological feature of this park and contains prehistoric Native American petroglyphs! Be sure to keep your dog on a lead and clean up after him to preserve this beautiful place.
We usually try to stay away from big cities when we RV because our dogs are elderly. But we found Gateway Arch State Park in Missouri to be the perfect balance between urban and original. The two iconic structures in this 91-acre park are impressive. Your dog will love walking through the green grass and parks, watching the horses and carriages go by, and relaxing on a picnic. Hired dogs can explore the park and walk along the boardwalk.

We love roadside attractions and unique stops, and the dog-friendly Frontier Village checked all our boxes! Original buildings from the border villages of North Dakota were brought here. Filled with unique antiques and artifacts, the exhibits are a great way to learn about North Dakota and its history. If you’re looking for the world’s largest bison monument, you’ve found it! Visit this special spot located near Frontier Village to take photos. You won’t be able to resist!
This park is a wonderful haven for native plants and wildlife, and your dog can roam with you on over 100 miles of trails in this national park. Why is Cuyahoga Valley National Park dear to my heart? There is a winery in the park! Yes, a dog-friendly winery! After walking and sightseeing, sit under the trees at Sarah’s Vineyard with your dog. As with any park, check pet restrictions before visiting.
Custer State Park is a South Dakota state park and wildlife refuge in the Black Hills, South Dakota. Custer State Park is known for its bison herds, scenic drives, historic sites, resorts, and campgrounds. It has been named one of the top ten wildlife destinations in the world due to the abundance of wildlife in the park. Located just 15 miles from the town of Custer, this state park is huge and impressive!

For the cake, mix all the ingredients and put in a warm place for an hour. Roll out the dough and place in a greased pizza pan, cast iron or deep dish. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Bake the dough for 15 minutes and remove from the oven. Place the cheese and filling on the crust, and top with the tomato sauce mixture. Return to the oven and bake for another 20 minutes. Allow to cool completely before serving to your dog.
