Killington, Vermont is the definition of rustic New England with the expected ski feel. They know how to have a good time and want to have a good time. You won’t find 5-star or even 4-star hotels here, but local hotels and guesthouses do a good job of making guests comfortable. Killington is located in central Vermont, right next to Woodstock. Yes, the Woodstock you’re thinking of!

The bonus with Killington is that it’s not just for winter hikers. They have activities all year round that keep you out in nature. You will find that the hotels here become more luxurious as you get closer to the mountain. We’ll cover some of the hotels you can stay at, but first let’s talk a little about Killington Ski Area.

There are several airports that you can use to plan your ski holiday. The closest option is Rutland Regional Airport (RUT). It is a Jet Blue hub, but the main commercial airline is Cape Air. If you can’t catch an easy flight here, Burlington International Airport (BTV), which is about 90 minutes away, would be your next best option.

There is a bus that takes you from the Burlington airport to Killington, but I recommend renting a car so you can drive into town as well. Finally, Albany International Airport (yes, in New York) is about 2 hours away, and Manchester Airport is also 2 hours away. Both are good options if you can’t find flights elsewhere.

Once your boots are on the ground, take Route 4 as your final route up the mountain until you reach Killington Road. When you go by car, you can find different ski shops (or rent on the mountain), as well as different restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner. When you are at or near the resort, you have everything within a few miles.

Killington is the perfect mountain for all levels of skiers to cut. It has great beginner terrain, but if you’re looking for steep and deep, Killington is one of the best mountains in the Northeast to find.

The East Coast is very different from what our West Coast and Rocky Mountain friends have. As we Eastern Jews say, we are “born of ice”. Now don’t let that stop you from skiing here! We have beautifully groomed trails and when it snows, the cleaning is like no other.

I recommend not venturing into the Killington backcountry unless you know where you are going and what you are doing. Killington is big enough that you can walk up to the resort and still be amazed at how big it is compared to our other east coast mountains.

It is also the largest ski area in the eastern United States, covering 1,509 hectares. Plus, it has the greatest vertical drop in all of New England: 3,050 feet. I could talk about the Killington terrain for days. But just know that everyone is welcome and the mountain will treat you favorably regardless of your ski level.

The Snowed Inn is close to the mountain and gives you a luxurious mom and pop feel. It’s a cozy little space that serves breakfast every day, so you don’t have to worry about eating a boring granola bar before hitting the slopes. In addition, you will enjoy mediocre hotel coffee. As you’d expect, they have a year-round hot tub that will save your feet if you’ve been skiing for more than a day.

The hotel is located just off Killington Road, so you can walk to the various restaurants and bars in Killington Mountain Village to enjoy after your day on the slopes. Finally, don’t worry about ski storage – Snowed Inn has you covered! It may be pretty, but it’s one of our favorite hotels in Killington.

The Killington Grand Resort Hotel is probably the most popular hotel option because it’s really close to the mountain. They also have full service which is great for solo or family travellers. You have everything here: games room, heated pool, restaurant and bar, hot tubs and pool, bus and even ski valet.

Another good thing is that there are several room options, so choose between a studio, a standard room and a suite with one to three bedrooms. And if you need even more beds, ask for a folding bed. It’s truly an excellent choice if you’re looking for full resort style at one of Killington’s best ski hotels.

If you like meeting your fellow travelers, try the small circuit of the River Lodge. It’s just off Route 4 before Mountain Road, and you’ll see this old wooden sign that says “River Crossing.” They keep it simple and accessible, with just a few rooms and a common area, plus a commonly used fridge and stove.

They have a lovely fireplace in the lobby which is perfect for meeting other ski bums. I recommend staying here if you are traveling alone or with your partner or best friend, not as a family. The rooms here are comfortable and there are also several sleeping options. The River Lodge retreat is the definition of rustic New England, but it’s a great budget-friendly yet quaint location.

Killington Mountain Lodge is part of Hilton Hotels and Resorts and is about a mile from the mountain (just enough to drive since they don’t have a car). The rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable, so that’s a big plus.

They also store your ski equipment so you don’t have to dry it in the bathtub. (I’ve done this in many other places, so I pretend it’s normal.) The lodge serves breakfast in the morning before you head out.

For a night out, I recommend checking out the Roaring Brook Umbrella as a small local bar and then grabbing a burger or hanging out at the Wobbly Barn on the way back to your hotel. Don’t miss going to the pool to relax your muscles and enjoy the rest of the evening. Mountain Lodge is a great place to relax and play pool or games with a beautiful view.

Note: They are currently under renovation, which has surprised some obnoxious guests. However, we are told that they are nearing completion.

Summit Lodge is my definition of cozy and warm, with a beautiful fireplace in the lobby to relax and play under the hand beamed ceiling beams. They serve American breakfast buffet to the guests and it is about 4 km from the mountain. Most of the places I recommend have hot tubs because they are my favorite amenity for every place I stay when I ski. As a bonus, Summit Lodge also has a sauna.

On the way back to the Summit Lodge, you pass several delicious restaurants. They’re all worth a try, but I’d save one night for the backcountry skiing at Casey Caboose. This is the best pub food in the area and I can almost guarantee you will return to Summit Lodge full and satisfied.

Stay at Sunrise Village if you want to escape the main road to the mountain and have ski-in/ski-out access. It’s a condominium complex, so it’s perfect for groups and families (and their pets!). Each apartment has a fireplace for those chilly nights. Pack PB&Js for lunch and stock up on groceries for dinner as each unit has a fully equipped kitchen.

You are not far from other restaurants in town, but if you prefer to cook your own food, these apartments are a good option. Each rental has slightly different amenities, but you should be able to find one that fits your needs – including a sauna!

Woodstock Inn & Resort is the definition of après ski. It’s a bit pricey (but it’s ex-ski too), but what I love about this hotel is that you can come back from a hard day on the slopes and use the spa. They also have yoga classes to stretch out sore muscles and a hot tub. After rest, you can go to the bar and have dinner
