Lake Tahoe is divided into North Lake and South Lake. Both areas offer similar activities throughout the year, but North Lake is known for being more relaxed than South Lake. We spend most of our winter visits at South Lake, but on summer trips we split our time between them and enjoy both as much as the other.

For the full Lake Tahoe summer experience, visit after Memorial Day and before Labor Day. Once we got to Tahoe Memorial Day weekend and it was snowing! If you don’t like 80 degree days, come earlier in the summer. Unfortunately, the temperature in Tahoe continues to rise every summer due to global warming, but the temperature in the Tahoe area is still the same as the rest of California, namely the temperature is drastically cooler in the mornings and evenings. So don’t forget your layers.
I would avoid coming on holiday weekends, like the 4th of July. Accommodation will be very expensive and the lake will be crowded. I also note golf tournaments that can drive up prices and cause crowds – there are several golf tournaments in the Tahoe area each year.
If you are flying into Tahoe, we recommend flying into Reno and want to rent a car. If you are driving, make sure you go at an inconvenient time to avoid the crowds coming in and out of the lake on weekends. People in the Bay Area practice summer Fridays, so avoid Friday afternoons when driving and Sunday afternoons when driving. These times will easily add one to two hours to your travel time. We also recommend planning for daylight when driving. This is one of our favorite tours that you don’t want to miss. The road is also a bit windy when entering South Lake at 80, and not too dangerous during the day.
There are many dog-friendly lodging options in Lake Tahoe. Whether you prefer a hotel or a rental house, we recommend choosing accommodation based on the location of your activities and the atmosphere of the area you are looking for. We prefer long-term rental houses or hotels with home facilities, and we have a garden or grass area nearby. We have stayed at The Coachman for short weekends and have rented several houses and apartments through AirBnB and VRBO. We were going to stick to this frame for our recent visit, but they had an explosion at home, so this is still on our wish list.

I usually like to look for accommodations within 30 minutes of most of our activities, so we spend more time exploring than driving. If you’re going to be in Tahoe for an extended period of time, consider splitting your time between North Lake and South Lake – the whole lake is worth enjoying! – and plan your activities accordingly.
We know it can be difficult to make travel plans for a place where you have so much to do. That’s why we’ve rounded up all of our favorite dog-friendly activities we enjoyed (and will alert you to the ones we didn’t) during our weeklong stay at Lake Tahoe.
Emerald Bay is 30 km north of South Lake Tahoe. Vehicles cannot drive to the lake, but there are many views and hiking trails. It’s a great place to watch the sunset at Inspiration Point, which has free parking near the lookout.
To see the sunset, you should arrive around 19:00. watch the sunset behind the trees, which is a great time for photos, then grab a bench and linger as the colors of the sky change as sunset approaches around 8:20pm.

There is another viewpoint over the lake, the Emerald Bay State Park Lookout, which is worth a visit, but before sunset. This observatory also has its own car park, and if it is full there is a car park at the edge of the main road. This vantage point loses visibility in the sun at 19:00. from sunset behind the trees, so plan to visit this place first and then walk a few minutes to Inspiration Point if you want to do both.
In the summer, hiking and playing are two of Tahoe’s biggest attractions for dogs. AllTrails also has a great interactive map that shows all the dog-friendly trails around Lake Tahoe, so it’s easy to find trails near your lodging or decide which trails to explore. We did all of our hiking at South Lake and loved every trail we chose.
I usually look for easy to moderate hikes that take no more than 3 hours to explore. We like to hike in the morning the best, so it coincides with Ruby’s regular morning walks and usually allows us to avoid the crowds and have good lighting and space for photos. After researching AllTrails and several Tahoe blogs, I took this hike the first few days of my trip to South Lake Tahoe.
Fallen Leaf Lake Trail is a trail near South Lake Tahoe. This trail is generally considered quite a challenging route, but we found it relatively easy. There are a few trees blocking the way and some inclines, but the path is relatively clear and flat. The trail is mostly dirt with rock structures, so you have to be careful where you step.

This is a very popular hiking area, so you’ll likely meet other people as you explore. The trail is open year-round, although the road is not plowed in winter, and it is beautiful to visit at any time. We met several dogs on our trip and every now and then one got out of control.
To access this trail, you must pay a $10 day use fee at the entrance to Fallen Leaf Lake Campground. The manager will give you a note to hang on the dashboard, then turn around and take the left path from the entrance to the day car park. The parking lot is about half a mile away and you will see it just past the trail on your left. There are about 20 pitches on day-use land and there is a path in front of the land that you can follow to cross the main path.
This trail starts with a beautiful view of the lake where you can walk to the shore. Some dogs went towards the water to have fun. There are also a few benches along the way if you want to sit and enjoy the view, and on the way back we saw some campers that had hit the water mid-morning to find their spot.
As you continue left onto the trail, you bubble and weave your way along the lake giving you a variety of lake and landscape views as well as a few shaded areas. The trail is generally pretty clear for the first 1.5 miles. I would recommend using AllTrails during your hike to keep you on the trail, we got turned around a bit as we went along and ended up in an unmarked area that was just open forest.

AllTrails says this hike usually takes about an hour, but we spent two hours here with photo stops and a little off-trail adventure at the end.
Be sure to bring enough water for you and your dog and pack all your belongings. One thing to note is that there are no trash cans in the area, not even at the trailhead, so be prepared to take anything your dog might leave behind.
Chimney Beach Trail is a 1.5 mile (2.4 km) trail located near Carson City, Nevada. This trail is a little more central than the lake, but closer to South Lake, especially if you live near the Stateline area. This is a very popular area for hiking, paddling and walking, so you’ll likely find other areas as well
