There are also deer ticks in this area, so be sure to do a thorough search after your day on the river. If you bring a dog, make sure to check them out too! If you find a tick on you, keep it after carefully removing it until you can be tested for Lyme disease by your County Public Health Laboratory.

Walk the trails upstream or downstream from the main entry point to find places to spread out. Or, go earlier in the morning or afternoon.

When visiting the Yuba River swimming holes, follow the no trace principles. Respect the area and other people, pack all your trash, and pack anything you find along the way.
The Hoyt Trail in South Yuba River State Park begins at the old Route 49 bridge, which features rocky beaches and shallow waters, making it a family attraction.
This main area around the bridge was busy by mid-morning, so we took the Hoyt Trail that heads east along the river to find a more secluded spot. There are several small paths leading from the main road down to the water, so you can find your accommodation. There are large rocks to sit on and climb, and the water here is relatively calm. place There are deep pockets where you can jump over the rocks. Aaron swam briefly in the river and climbed a small waterfall before walking back.
If you continue on the main trail to the end, you’ll reach Hoyt Crossing, a spot popular with skinny dippers.

The spot we found about 15 minutes up the Hoyt Trail has become my favorite swimming hole along the Yuba River because the water feels good (a little warmer than some of the others) and there is a lot of riverbank to spread. we don’t collect other people.
Parking: There is a small car park next to the footbridge, as well as marked parking spaces on the road. Make sure you are on the road when parking. You may have to park all the way to find safe parking.
Emerald Pools is one of the most popular swimming spots on the Yuba River. It’s about a quarter of a mile walk on a wide flat path before you reach the main pool. This place is great for cliff jumping and swimming. The river is fed by melting snow, and is usually very calm in the summer. The water was cold, but it felt good on a hot sunny summer day.
This main area can be busy, so head to the river through the gorges. The emerald color is especially beautiful in this rocky gorge. We found a small spot in one of the small, shallow pools in the river. It’s about two feet deep where Hudson can splash, play and roll around on a floatie.

On the way out we spent some time in the main pool sitting and floating. It was quite busy earlier today, but started to empty out a bit later in the afternoon.
Parking: There is a small dirt parking lot before the bridge, and along the road before the trailhead. Make sure your car is completely off the road. The police go through the area, especially on busier days, and write parking tickets for cars that are partially on the road.
Brideport is another popular swimming spot in South Yuba River State Park, a few miles downstream from Hoyt’s Crossing.
Bridgeport’s covered bridge is currently being restored. It was first built in 1862 and is the longest single span covered bridge in the country. Water is still accessible during construction, but some parking lots and areas around the bridge may be closed.

Parking: There are parking lots located north and south of the river. Parking is $10 from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. The rate is reduced to $5 for the rest of the year. Parking is covered with a California State Park pass. You can also find free parking in the Cemetery car park and on Pleasant Valley Road (just make sure you check the signs).
We found this place in the afternoon, so after climbing the rocks on the banks, we watched the sunset from the Edwards Crossing Bridge truss arch.
The river is wide in this area, and by the end of the day, it’s probably some of the warmest water I’ve ever felt. This is probably because the water had to warm up in the sun all day, and towards the end of the day the water and the outside temperature are closer to each other.
If the main area around the bridge is busy, scramble down the rocks or take the paths to find an empty spot nearby. The South Yuba Campground is just a few miles from Edwards Crossing if you want to camp nearby.

Parking: Parking is very limited around the bridge, with lots of dirt on both sides. Just a short distance from the bridge there are signs that say there is no parking on the road. I saw several cars parked past the signs, all with $70 tickets on their windshields.
The Trail at Purdon Crossing is 3.5 miles out and back, with the trail running parallel to the Yuba River for the first ¾ mile. There are several places on the path that leads down to the river. This is another swimming hole in the Yuba River that is probably clothing optional.
Parking: There is limited parking in the lot before the bridge. Daytime parking is permitted on the road, unless a sign is posted to that effect
