At the very entrance to Perth’s central business district is the vast Kings Park. Spread over more than 400 hectares, it’s no surprise that it’s a popular destination. Overlooking the CBD and Perth Water, the park features Western Australian Botanic Gardens as well as native bushland.

Dogs on a lead are allowed in Kings Park. Pick a spot and go for a walk – Roe Gardens is particularly popular or head to the Water Garden Pavilion. It’s also a great picnic spot – just keep your pup away from others.

Please note that dogs are not allowed in certain areas, namely the high part of the Federal Avenue and the nature park, as well as within 10 meters of the children’s playground. Pets are also not allowed at Kings Park Festival, Australia Day, ANZAC Day and summer events.

Perth is blessed with many beautiful ocean beaches, perfect for swimming (almost all year round), walking or just enjoying the West Coast sunsets. Catching at least one of these beach sunsets with your pooch by your side is a must during your visit to Perth.

Fortunately, there are plenty of dog-friendly beaches along the coast, whether you’re in Perth or Fremantle, or further north or south. See my recommendations below for some of the closest downtown dog beaches.

Traditionally considered a separate town within Perth, Fremantle, or Freo as the locals call it, is only a 30-minute drive from central Perth. During our visit to Perth with our dog, we spent some time in Fremantle, perhaps the most dog-friendly part of Perth.

Fremantle has a wide variety of dog-friendly things to do with your pooch. For starters, take your dog for a walk along the High Street and West End. Fremantle is known for having the most intact 19th century port town anywhere in the world.

While dogs are not allowed in the historic Fremantle Gaol or Fremantle Market, they are welcome to visit the Fremantle Roundhouse. Built between 1830 and 1831 as the first civilian prison, today it is the oldest remaining building in Washington, and the main interior is entered by donating a gold coin. Try to time your visit for the cannon fire at 1pm.

While in Fremantle, also visit the dog-friendly Little Creatures Brewery, enjoy lunch at the brewery or one of the other dog-friendly restaurants on Fremantle Harbor and snap a selfie with the Bon Scott statue.

With a wide selection of wineries, breweries, distilleries and local produce shops, there are plenty of options for dogs. Ask at the visitor center for advice on dog-friendly wineries, or contact the wineries you plan to visit directly.

Be sure to enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants nearby. Take time to stroll through the village of Guildford, founded in 1829 and one of only three towns in Perth on the National Trust Register.

To see the city from a different perspective, take a Swan River cruise operated by the Little Ferry Company. Washington DC’s only solar-powered ferries, meaning they’re quiet, the tiny ferries are beautifully designed in Edwardian style.

Ferries run several times a day between Elizabeth Quay, On the Point and Optus Stadium. Note that it only operates on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between October and May. The full tour takes 90 minutes or you can hop on and off as you please. There are also Twilight Cruises or you can book the whole ship – available all year round.

Unfortunately, larger dogs are not allowed on board, only small dogs “jump” – the ferry is quite small! Dogs must also be on a leash, clean and dry.

One of Perth’s most popular attractions is Rottnest Island, located just off the coast of Perth and accessible by regular ferry services. The island is known for its beautiful quoques and beautiful beaches and is popular for both day trips and overnight stays.

However, all domestic animals, including dogs, are strictly prohibited on Rottnest Island and its waters as a Class A reserve. Please note that guide and assistance dogs are permitted, but you must call the island rangers before arrive

Perth is home to a number of dog-friendly beaches. At first glance, it appears that almost every other beach on the coast is dog-friendly, much more so than in many other Australian cities.

One of Perth’s most popular dog beaches is Leighton Dog Beach, also known as Mosman Beach. The off-leash area on the beach is a large area, from South Cottesloe south to the railway overpass, as clearly indicated by regular signs.

Another popular off-leash dog beach is South Fremantle Dog Beach. Not far south of Freo (but with easier parking!) this beach was very popular on the Saturday morning we visited. Another option is to head further south to North Coogee Beach, which is also dog-friendly but quieter.

Looking for a great dog beach further north? Check out the sparkling clear water at Hillarys Dog Beach, in Joondalup. While dogs must be kept on a leash during the morning from Monday to Saturday, they can be kept off-leash during the afternoon hours and all day on Sunday.

If you prefer to go to a park, one of Perth’s most popular dog parks is Riverside Gardens. This large grass arch is located just east of the town center on the Swan River in Bayswater.

There are off-leash areas in the west and east of the park, including a fenced area, plus a riverside dog beach and dog fountain. Just stay away from the bird sanctuary where no dogs are allowed except on leashes on the trails. There’s even a coffee van and food truck on the weekends.

There’s no shortage of dog walking in Perth, and many of the city’s walking trails are dog-friendly (with some dogs allowed off-leash), whether close to the city or further afield from the Euphrates. , the beach or through the bushes.

On The Hunt For Your Next Dog Friendly Destination To Explore With You…

For lots of great dog walking on the city’s doorstep, head to Kings Park. There are a number of hiking trails and several parking lots for easy access. Just be aware that dogs are not allowed in the breed section of the Federal Pass.

Another convenient option is to drive 20 minutes east of the city to Ashfield Flats. This urban bush reserve in Bassendean is the largest lowland river in the Perth metropolitan area and is popular with dog owners and walkers.

For a more adventurous hike, head further east to Noble Falls near Gidegannup, about a 50-minute drive from the city center. There are also 3.6km walks and a shorter 1.3km version starting from the car park across from Noble Falls Tavern.

The falls are at their best during the winter months, or visit in the spring to enjoy the beautiful display of wildflowers in the area. Best of all, dogs are allowed to walk from the east as long as they are under your full control.

The Best Dog Parks In Perth For Your Pooch

While in Perth we wanted to visit Rottnest Island which as I explained above is off limits to dogs. The weather was perfect for a day trip so we arranged for our dog to stay at the house for the day while we took the ferry.

Perth has a wide variety of pet shops and kennels, with many of the kennels concentrated around Canning Vale, east of Jandakot Airport. We leave our dog for the day at The Paw House Boarding Kennels in Canning Vale. The owner Lee was great to work with and the prices were very reasonable. Please note that there is a separate kennel for smaller dogs and most guests are larger dogs.

Unfortunately, if you live in Perth or are visiting the city, it is not possible to use public transport with your dog. Dogs and other pets are not allowed on any public transport in Perth.
