If you want to be outdoors more, why not create your own camp? Bring your four-legged friend to one of our great camps! Julian Price, Flintlock Camp, Grandfather Camp, and Blue Bear Mountain Camp are all pet friendly! We like to go skiing with the whole family and empty nesters. In this article, we will share tips for skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain. We are skiing at Sugar Mountain Resort in North Carolina. We started going when our children were in elementary school and have since become a family with older children.
Neil and I also love to ski with us (and our dog Daisy who sleeps in the condo while we ski).
If possible, drive a 4WD vehicle as you will be driving on snow. On the way to the apartment you will drive up and down mountain roads. But they do a great job of cleaning and sprinkling the roads.
We have rented apartments from several people and had good experiences with each of them. We even took our dog who slept in the apartment all day while skiing.
Beech Mountain Ski-in/ski-out Vacation Rentals
We rent a hive for years. The advantage is that you can ski in (easy outside), which is great for family members and their apartments. For a year, we rented two apartments with their own corridor, which made it easy to go in and out.
For the past two years, Neil and I (just the two of us at the time) had been renting an apartment in Briar Cliff. We went to Sugar Mountain Ski Resort and rented a locker to store our skis, poles, body armor and helmets. They are beautiful and very friendly, so Daisy can come with us. He is a good traveler and sleeps in the apartment all day while we ski.
Most apartments and houses have fireplaces, so you can bring wood or buy it at your local grocery store or Lowe’s in Banner Elk. It’s quite expensive to buy, but it’s good to help the local economy. We usually use two groups per night.
We have frozen meals and soups in the large refrigerator for lunch and dinner, so you don’t have to eat out, saving you money and time. After a whole day of skiing, we take a shower, put on our pajamas and enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal.
Pet Friendly Cottages & Rooms
One night we had pizza at Bella’s, a wonderful pizza place in Banner Elk. We also love to eat at the Banner Elk Tavern.
Sometimes it rains and snows, so take care of warm and waterproof clothes. I discovered I didn’t have a warm waterproof jacket.
If the apartment has a dryer, take several pairs of ski gloves or dry them overnight. It’s a shame to start the day with wet gloves. (Some apartments have washers and dryers, others don’t.)
I recommend taking ski socks as well. Ski jackets have no support, ski socks are designed for a slightly narrow fit, warm and comfortable skiing.
Lake Norman Pet-friendly Vacation Rentals
Don’t forget ski goggles or at least good sunglasses. Of course, I love glasses on a cold day and sunglasses on a hot day.
If you are going to the resort and back, I recommend snowshoes or at least waterproof boots. You will be walking in snow and in many cases muddy water and mud.
You can rent all the equipment at Sugar Mountain Resort, where we do. To save time, I recommend renting equipment for the day or night before the first day of skiing. The morning lines can be very long and you’ll miss out on riding time. We rent the following things:
You also need to purchase daily tickets for the roof/funicular. They can be purchased at 20:00 or before the start of skating. They don’t allow you to buy more than one day at a time.

If you don’t know what kind of skiing I recommend, especially for adults, you can sign up for resort skiing. Children learn quickly, especially if the adults in your group know how to ski. We taught our girls two easy streets (beginner tracks). Only then did they look positive.
If you are driving or skiing (or staying in a ski/ski house or condo), I recommend renting a cabin. Allows overnight storage of skis, poles, ski jackets, helmets, etc. Carrying all this equipment in a car or apartment is a big task.
If you rent a storage room, we will provide you with plastic bags to cover your ski boots overnight (see picture below). This prevents water from helmets and skis from getting into the night armor. Walking the next morning in wet shoes is terrible.
We also have a boot dryer (glove and hat dryer if you don’t have a dryer in your apartment). We rented equipment that day, our shoes got wet and we dried them in the dryer.
Best Ski Cabins In New England
You can buy tickets for night skiing/lifts. We did this once as a family and it was so much fun! Still, it’s nice to go back to the apartment and rest, especially for us middle-aged people.
