Our backyard is decorated with tiki (mostly from street fairs and some purchased on our travels). This is why this stall is so popular with us. We’re always looking to add a little Hawaiian flair to our garden.

San Diego’s Best Dog-friendly Places, Restaurants, & Shops

We bought the third one on the top shelf. There are so many options and so many interesting options.

We love the local artisans at the Carlsbad Street Fair. This hand-blown glass jellyfish caught our attention and now adorns our fireplace. And with Mother’s Day just around the corner, this street fair is the perfect place to pick up a unique handmade gift for mom, while supporting a local San Diego business.

The Carlsbad Street Fair involves a lot of walking, so wear shoes that are comfortable and bring a good appetite. H-O-L-Y Guakamory, so many delicious dishes.

And don’t forget to stay hydrated. In recent years, street festivals have been very hot, but this year it seems like it’s about to rain. We love refueling the juice truck. Free green juice? Yes, please! They also give away free custom-designed t-shirts.

Even if you don’t plan on buying anything at the Carlsbad Street Fair, this is still a great opportunity to explore all that Carlsbad has to offer. Plus, you get to see all the fun stuff. Last year, I even saw a pet pig on a leash. πŸ™‚ The Carlsbad Street Fair is now in its 43rd year.

β€œThe Carlsbad Village Fair is a celebration of Southern California culture and our community,” said Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Ted Owen. “Carlsbad recently topped Men’s Magazine’s 2016 Best Places to Live list. Food, music, art, family, friends and lots of laughter – we can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday in San Diego. I look forward to seeing you there!

Spring is the perfect time to explore the great outdoors and hike in San Diego. The weather is beautiful, there are tons of trails to choose from, and the best part is that it’s usually free. Calavera Lake Carlsbad is one of our favorite hiking trails in San Diego. It is the largest of 13 city-owned and managed nature preserves in Carlsbad. It’s easily accessible (right off Highway 78), has plenty of free street parking, has lots of wildlife, and beautiful fall foliage (especially since this year we have too much rain. Done!) And it’s dog friendly. We took our two dogs, Tiki and Kaya, on an adventure.

What’s unique about this nature reserve is that you can explore the (currently extinct) volcanoes here. Mount Calavera is actually a 22 million year old crater and one of only three in Southern California. They say that on a clear day you can get amazing ocean views from the top of the mountain trail, but we didn’t go that far.

Calavera Lake has over 4 miles of trails with 6 trails to choose from. One of the most extensive trail networks in Carlsbad, connecting to other trails. A Chihuahua’s tiny legs can only go so far. Our walk usually looks like the picture above. I bring both. I don’t really know who’s running here. πŸ™‚

If you take your dog to Calavera Lake, be sure to keep him on a leash and watch out for rattlesnakes. Snakes are commonly seen on trails in the spring and summer. In fact, there was a snake on the trail the last time we were there (and there was a snake in the backyard just a few weeks ago. My dogs really wanted it) (please check) because so be sure to keep an eye out for the trail past native wildlife.

Speaking of wildlife, Calavera Lake is home to all kinds of animals, from rattlesnakes to herons, herons, ducks, and more. We also saw turtles swimming in the lake. Not a bad way to spend a week if you ask us. This man decided to take a photo…

Calavera Lake has more than four plant species and 17 native plant communities on site, including Degan coastal sage, southern chaparral mixed wetlands, and freshwater wetlands. It’s amazing what you have in your backyard, just a few miles from the highway. Nature abounds here, and the hills were once lush with greenery. Even though this nature preserve is in San Diego’s backyard, it felt like we were on vacation.

If you’re looking for something unique, there’s also the Super Solar System Walk, which is great for families. The walk includes 10 interpretive signs along the 1-mile path, representing each of the Sun and Pluto plants. This project was created by local Eagle Scouts to show the relative distances between the Sun and all the planets in the solar system. A great choice for families who want to get out and do something fun and educational.

Calavera Lake is a good choice for many different activity levels. Six different trails let you choose your exciting adventure. It’s a place we always want to return to because there is so much to explore. You can take the “easy” route, a 1.9-mile loop around the lake (the dog’s favorite), or choose the more “challenging” route that takes you up Calavera Mountain (513-about 100 miles (Search for this). something more adventurous on the 10 foot peak) – climb to the top someday for this ocean view πŸ™‚ Calavera Lake has everyone from families to runners to mountain bikers for it. to couples to exercise. There is truly something for everyone. The area is large (110 acres) so it never feels crowded.

This has definitely become one of our favorite places to hike (aka hike) in San Diego. There are some suggestions, if you are interested, please take a look!

The other entrance (just off College Blvd/Sky Heaven Linen) has a “bamboo garden” and sculpture garden that is really worth a visit. We love the diversity of this hiking destination. If you want to walk a more active route, the Skyhaven LN entrance is often the best choice.

We love a cheap date night, and Pieology Pizza at Carlsbad Bressi Ranch Village Center has become one of our favorite spots for a cheap night on the town. We focus on saving money, so we try not to spend a lot of money when dining out. At Pieology, you can have a fun date with delicious food and drinks for less than $20. It’s fun and relaxing (I love the inspirational quote wall below, don’t you?) and happens to be one of our favorite dog-friendly restaurants.
