Whether you prefer a trip to the beach or mountains, staying close to the city or taking a road trip, I have lots of ideas for day trips around Melbourne with your dog. 1 hour drive from the city center. Which of these fun ideas would you like to bring to your dog?

Melbourne is world-famous for its street art. And exploring on foot for a few hours is actually a wonderful activity for your pup. Unlike art museums, there are no rules about pets roaming the streets!

Melbourne’s most famous street art spot is Hoosier Lane in the city center, right next to Federation Square. I also highly recommend nearby ACDC Lane and Duckboard Place, which are usually less crowded. Take your dog for a walk and visit one of the dog-friendly cafes in the city’s alleyways or along the Yarra River.

If you don’t want to venture into the city centre, there are plenty of great examples on the outskirts of other cities – enjoy brunch at a café or a drink at a local pet-friendly pub.

Portland Dog Friendly Beaches

If you prefer nature walks over dirt roads, one of the best places outside of Melbourne is Yue Yang Regional Park. Located less than an hour from central Melbourne, this local park welcomes your dogs as long as they are on a leash.

You Yangs is named after a local Aboriginal word meaning ‘big mountain in the middle of the plain’. The park’s most popular walk leads to the summit of Flinders Peak. This granite peak offers spectacular views across Melbourne and the Bellarine Peninsula. The 3.5km round trip walk takes about an hour to complete and has many stairs along the way.

There are also a variety of short and long walks, including flatter options. An easier option is the 800m loop around Big Rock. Don’t miss the short walk to this granite summit, just 100 meters from the car park. There are many picnic areas in the park.

A favorite weekend getaway in Melbourne that your pooch will love is Miss Drew’s Bakery and Dog Cafe on the Mornington Peninsula. Located behind Tyabb Packing House and surrounded by antique shops, Dog Cafe is open Saturdays and Sundays. (It is best to check business hours in advance.)

Another highlight of a visit to the botanical gardens is the lake walk. Private guided punt tours usually last about 30 minutes and run from September to May. The punt can accommodate up to six passengers, and well-behaved dogs ride free. There’s even an Instagram account dedicated to dogs participating in punt tours!

It’s best to book in advance, at least during the off-season. Punts leave from the landing in front of the Terrace Café.
