Dog Friendly Family Vacations

Dog Friendly Family Vacations – Ah, sleep, that’s what I live for. That and those soft, chewy treats my mom pulls out of the pantry when I do tricks after the bath and just because I’m a good boy (which she always is, if you ask me). I live a pretty simple life but that’s the way I like it. It consists of eating (my favorite), sleeping (my second favorite) and belly rubs (never enough). Home is where my tail is, but put me in a car that goes literally anywhere and I’m impressed. Will you take me in the car to go on holiday? The dog won the lottery.

Being such a good kid (read above), my family always finds pet-friendly resorts in Minnesota for our vacations, and I feel like the pick of the bunch. Whether you have a young dog in your team, a new cat, whatever your pedigree, if you want to join

1. Let’s talk about travel. It is important to be prepared when traveling in the car with your dog or cat. Safety must always be number one. Like I said, I’m a simple guy, so if I can look out the window at the gorgeous view of Minnesota, I’m a happy guy. I’m also a fan of the seat belt buckle. This is the one I have https://www.chewy.com/kurgo-direct-to-seatbelt-dog-collar/dp/56751. Some dogs and cats like a little more comfort, so they prefer something like https://www.chewy.com/snoozer-pet-products-lookout-ii-dog/dp/140449. Whichever you choose, add a car seat cover if you don’t want to be pulling your hair out of your clothes for months. The crux of the matter? If Max or Tiger do not travel freely in the car, you start the journey on the right foot.

2. Is your pet up to date on flea and tick prevention? Has he been microchipped? These are things to check off your list before you go. Also, keep your medical records with you in case of an emergency or if your pet-friendly resort requires vaccinations or medical history. Taking everyone on a safe and healthy adventure makes the time even more enjoyable.

3. You might be surprised at the number of pet-friendly resorts in Minnesota! If you are not sure, call. There may be an extra fee, weight restrictions, or rules about what kind of pets you can bring (I’m not sure if Buddy the Bearded Dragon is welcome), but it’s best to ask. My personal favorite is The Red Door Resort. It’s spacious, the staff are friendly and attentive and there are lots of sticks to find, leaves to hunt and fresh air to breathe. And my family is always in a good mood when they are there. Red Door Resort has a few rules, but mostly it’s just fun!

O Bringing a pet to your resort is $15 per day, but additional cleaning fees may apply if the pet policy is not followed. They want you to keep pets off the furniture; this includes beds, bunk beds, sofas and chairs. If your pet is used to standing on furniture in the house (lifting on the paw), he will ask you to bring a sheet or blanket to put on the furniture. If you do not do this, an additional cleaning fee will be charged. Bedding, pillows, etc. If it needs washing, it’s usually $50, but can be more if furniture needs to be replaced due to damage or stains.

O Some accommodations at The Red Door Resort do not allow furry friends, so be sure to let them know you’re bringing your best friend when you book!

The Fern Samali Resort

O Pets are not allowed on or near the beach, but they are allowed in the port.

O Furry friends must be on a leash when on the property and not left unattended except in kennels. Housekeeping staff will not enter the unit if a dog is barking or not being used.

4. What to pack for your Minnesota vacation: Fur babies or human babies, it’s always a battle. Here’s a list to help you get started:

5. Make a plan! I usually like to stop for a bathroom break every few hours and stretch my legs for a few minutes. And of course I want to eat lunch, dinner and snacks when you eat. Flexibility is very important! Maybe the weather isn’t what you expected, or maybe a pit stop will require me to do a little too much wooden nose, but we’re all in this together (and I’m in the car!) and that’s all that matters.

Once you reach your home away from home, I hope you feel relaxed and ready to take on the outdoor adventures, snuggles, and quality time away from family that lies ahead of you and your loved ones. I am glad to have played perhaps a small part in what I hope will be not only an enjoyable experience in the land of 10,000 lakes, but also a treasured memory.

*Yawn* I don’t know about you, but I think this calls for a nap in the Minnesota sun. Go now and plan your vacation with your family! All credit goes to you for how prepared and organized you are, I’m not saying that. I send an invoice for tasks performed, payment on the stomach and scratches on the ears.
