Located within walking distance of Bednell (where there is a lovely pub, a fantastic dog beach with lots of water sports, restaurants and shops) and a short drive to Bamberg and the houses by the sea, it is one of the best areas to explore. coast of Northumberland.
There are two cabins: one for four and the other for two. We stayed in the Sandpiper, which sleeps four people. Each cabin has its own enclosed garden and amenities, but there is a door between the two if you want to rent them both together.

We visited with our two boys and only had a couple of negative points to note: firstly there is quite a bit of traffic noise from the opposite road (it dies down after 7pm) and secondly upstairs there were no safety bars so it really wouldn’t be suitable for small children (edit to add the owner got in touch to say they had a safety bar – he removed it before the our trip had gone).

The cabins here are very well equipped – from crockery to towels, wood for the fire, corkscrew, dishwasher, toiletries, cutlery, fridge, private bathroom, binoculars, guide everything is provided , What you need Steve is impressed to find a pair of tongs in the toolbox because many places don’t have them and he’s lost in the kitchen without them. Everything is finished to a very high standard and everything feels nice and luxurious.

Not so much for us now, but when the kids were little, an enclosed garden was a dream for us. It was always a relief to be able to sit outside and know the kids weren’t running around the street. Now as a parent of older children I still appreciate this private space and it was lovely to sit outside overlooking the beach and Dunstenberg Castle.
Terminus is high on many people’s bucket list when booking a short break and Shepherds Retreats really delivers. Designed for two people, heat the hot tub from the adjacent stove. It takes about 90 minutes to get up to temperature, but once you do, just run the fire for 30 minutes or so when you use it again during the break to get up to temperature. This hot tub is the hottest hot tub I have ever been in. It was a pleasure and I think heating it yourself with the wood stove added to the experience and enjoyment of it all. We had a routine where the kids would enjoy the tub in the afternoon and Steve and I would jump in when the sun went down. It was beautiful.
Bednell is a beautiful place and the beach here really reminds me of parts of Cornwall. The beach is dog-friendly and here you can try kayaking, kitesurfing, paddle boarding or other water sports. There are instructions and equipment to rent right next to the beach.
We had a good laugh watching a family try sea kayaking – the kids got right into it and let their parents struggle to get started. They probably fell off about 10 times, but it was all so much fun and well done for trying them out. I finally found them! There is also a good food shack on the beach (see their Facebook page here).
Glamping With Hot Tubs Near Dunoon, Argyll And Bute
The Bait at Beadnell really seems to be the heart of the community and offers seafood at reasonable prices. I’ll try to go with Steve sometime, because his lobster and fries look divine! There are also many activities such as yoga on the beach. The people who live here are truly my dream life. Bednell is also home to the Christer Arms, one of my favorite pubs.
Sea Houses and Bamberg are within 5 miles and definitely worth a visit. I recommend taking a boat trip with Serenity Tours to see Sail and Bamberg Castle and the beach.
Box Pizza is just down the road – a 10 minute walk and great for takeaway or sit down. Their pizza is divine! Check their Facebook page for opening hours and their latest deals as they can be a bit sporadic. You can read Steve’s review of Box Pizza here.
If we don’t have a campfire while glamping, glamping is not kid-friendly. There are plenty of options, from indoor and outdoor wood-burning stoves to barbecues and pizza ovens. Back to basics at its best. But I overdid the marshmallows!

It’s all good to have a digital detox and spend less time on our phones during our time at Shepherd’s Retreats. The kids played in the garden, we hung out in the hot tub and around the fire cooking/roasting marshmallows, played games (Aimless is our favorite) and read books but kept in touch with people and Instagram. too
There are USB chargers (bring a car adapter) and Wi-Fi. Harry was glad he could still watch his YouTube videos and listen to his podcasts while enjoying his hot chocolate before bed. When I travel with tweens and tweens, I think it’s a compromise, and I won’t bother Harry because he’s on his phone when he’s actively involved with us in other ways. It helps make recess feel less “stuffy” and as I always say, it’s the kids’ recess too and if they want to spend some time on the phone why not. It’s all about balance and it’s great that the option exists.
Just above the king-size bed is a stargazing canopy. I have never been to one of these and I really think it is the USP. It was so relaxing to lie in bed and watch the clouds float by on the horizon. When was the last time you saw a cloud? I don’t remember telling Steve all weekend that I felt so relaxed. In the evening, when we turned off the lights, it was beautiful to see all the stars shining overhead. There are curtains if you are worried about the light the next morning, but we didn’t use them and everything was fine.
I love that Shepherd’s Retreat is dog friendly. The area is great for dog walking and all the beaches are dog friendly too. Dogs are now allowed in the grounds of nearby Bamberg Castle and many pubs/restaurants are dog-friendly (you can read about some dog-friendly pubs and restaurants here).
Glamping In Scotland
Dogs receive a VIP welcome with homemade dog treats in the welcome pack, sand paws in the garden, dog towels, food and a hose to clean the water bowls. As a non dog owner you would never call this place dog friendly and there was no sign that a dog had ever stayed here. Definitely the best of both worlds!
The huts were built by a local Hexham craftsman from recycled materials. I love that our cabin floor was part of the Rex Hotel in Whitley Bay. The cabins received a Silver Award for their Green Tourism efforts, including using “A” rated appliances, recycling bins, using local suppliers for their welcome packs, using solar energy, Britain’s 100% sustainable use of wood from forests, including ecological use. .
