I have to start this list with one of my favorite places in western Pennsylvania: Brady’s Run Park. Peter’s Lake Park is a popular recreational area located at 560 Center Church Road in Canonsburg, Washington County, which offers many features that make it a great place for dogs to swim, especially the large lake that gives the place its name.

The easy 1.7-mile trail around the lake begins at the parking lot with a quarter-mile loop that weaves through trees before finally becoming a wood/dirt road. Because it is flat, it is available for most dogs looking to stretch their legs on a walking leash after a good swim.

The pool, with its always clean water, offers a combination of shallow and deep areas so you can safely encourage your dog to take a dip regardless of his swimming ability or size. (Tip: there’s a small dock near the far end of the lake where your beer can go on tap. It’s also a great place to take pictures.)

This area of Butler County may be best known for its network of more than 28 miles of trails that are great for dog walking and hiking, but the 3,225-acre Lake Arthur lake that dogs are copying everywhere!

While dogs are not allowed in designated areas of the river, they are allowed in other parks, including the beach. By observing the quality of the water, you will see that it is one of the cleanest and safest in the area. You can feel your confidence rise and your dog will enjoy the new confidence and security of being able to see your clean water.

Once the trail is smooth, enjoy a walk along the beach or into the forest on the popular 14.8-mile Glacier Ridge Trail or Butterfly Trail.

Moraine State Park offers several dog camping options, allowing you to extend your day trip and immerse yourself in the park’s friends. If you’re up for a day trip, head a few hours north to Presque Isle State Park in Erie. Dogs are allowed on some Presque Isle beaches, but there are rules and regulations that must be followed to ensure the safety of pets and other resort guests.

Dogs are allowed on unguarded beaches that are not designated as designated swimming areas. Hunter and I especially like the sand between Barracks Beach and Beach 6. The sandy Lake Erie sand is soft on the dogs’ feet and gives them a cool and warm place to walk and play. There are also huge rock formations that have fallen into the water and even fallen trees on the beach.

It is important to remember that swimming in Lake Erie can be dangerous due to flooding and unpredictable currents especially because of the lake’s proximity to Presque Island, which helps protect it from waves. If your dog is an inexperienced swimmer or prefers to stay close to shore, stick to shallower swimming areas. If you allow your furry friend to go deep into the pool, pay attention to the water conditions and keep him in your line at all times.
