Vacation Dog Killer

Vacation Dog Killer – When people think of animals in Africa, they think of them being trampled by elephants or being chased across the savannah by a pride of lions. Maybe they fear being Mufasa-ed by a wildebeest or buffalo, poisoned by a black mamba, attacked by a hippo or suffocated by a croc.

But this is stupid. The crown of Africa’s deadliest animal bones has to go to the cuddliest animals of the bunch: the painted dog.

The painted African dog looks a lot like your nose, but I promise you, this dog is not wearing a Christmas sweater. They have been called African wild dogs, Cape hounds, armored wolves, and half a dozen other combinations of these terms.

He is more powerful than his big ears and calico coat. Some people call them “devil dogs”, and perhaps not without reason.

“One of the reasons people think of painted dogs as ruthless killers is because they disperse their prey,” says Esther van der Meer, scientific adviser at Painted Dog Conservation.

So if you have kids or vegetarians nearby, you may want to transfer or wear some headphones. Because all red-tooth-and-nail nature is supposed to enter here.

I spent a week with the team at WildEarth.tv, a group that streams events from the African bush online twice a day. His Safari Live show airs on Nat Geo Wild this week during Big Cat Week. (Full disclosure: Nat Geo Wild paid for my travel and lodging. I received a tab for malaria medication.)

While the rest of us forget to put cover sheets on our test method specification reports, WildEarth.tv crew members are tracking leopards through their urine, poking their heads into hyena range and observing them.

Like a power struggle between a pride of lions. And while they see the Big Five literally every day, many of them were surprised to see wild dogs.

Perhaps this is because they bring wild dogs to life as they really are: bloodthirsty carnivores that can take much larger animals to the bone, and highly social farm animals with strange hierarchies that would greatly offend one of Ayn Rand’s supporters. Each aspect of their biology supports the other. You cannot separate the two.

Take this clip of a wild dog hunt filmed by WildEarth.tv during Big Cat Week last year. I’ll tell you right now that it ends with the bloodiest kill I’ve ever seen: the dogs maul a pregnant impala and her kicking fetus carries away as the camera moves a few feet away. But we can’t let the horror of the action overshadow the brilliance it creates. A moment that’s more. For now, just watch.

“Although it’s not a pretty sight, it’s a quick way to kill prey,” van der Meer said, “especially compared to the time it takes a lion to kill prey.”

Large cats tend to go into the animal’s airway, a procedure that can fail if there is no restraint. Another way is to cover the nose and mouth. And at least one pride of lions has learned how to bring down elephants: first they break the elephant’s rope, then crush another lion’s trunk and neck as they attack, collapsing under their own weight. Usually, you should be able to see them

For example, cheetahs tend to overheat, so you’ll often see them sitting on a victim and dying in the middle, while the doomed animal is pitied in the dust. Not so with wild dogs. Because they have evolved to withstand high body temperatures, they do not need cooling. This means that if someone ever catches you, you’ll probably be on half a dozen stomachs before you know you’ve hit the ground.

But at least you can make sure to share your body! Van der Meer explained that wild dogs do not show aggression towards each other, and especially not during feeding time. And research shows that wild dog seal pups are prioritized for slaughter as soon as they are old enough to join the hunt. In fact, at the beginning of the video above, you can see an adult dog leaving the hunt, which includes a bunch of puppies. And suddenly, that one-on-one aspect overtakes youthful moments.

“Painted dogs are highly social animals who care not only for their puppies, but also for the sick and injured,” van der Meer said.

Packs can consist of six to 20 animals and are usually led by an alpha pair. When one member of the alpha pair dies, it splits into two groups of adults of the same sex. Interestingly, a male in a small group of the older sex, rather than an older one, gets the status of alpha dog of the male group. Alpha girls maintain their dignity throughout their lives.

This solution, known as packet fission, allows for the peaceful transfer of power, while diversifying the gene pool. Over the course of a year, the dynamics of each pack will change as new cubs are born and sexually mature males join in hopes of breeding.

Roger Burrows, AfricanWildDogWatch.org, has a full document on the process, but here are a few notes that highlight the crazy inverted hierarchy of these animals: Whenever the alpha male is given status, the old alpha remains (if alive). If the group finds male orphans in the pack peace, they will adopt them. When the orphans are sexually mature, one of them will control their nutritional package as the alpha, again, all without violence. If both breeding pairs have offspring in the same season, the offspring of the subordinate pair takes precedence over the offspring of the alpha pair. In other words, Africa’s painted dogs live by a code that goes against everything you know about capitalism, the “laws of the jungle,” and your high school cafeteria.

So yes, we’re talking about an animal with the strongest bite quotient of any living carnivore, an animal with massive prehensile designed to crush bone, an animal with one of the highest success rates of any predator on Earth. by hunting But they are not weapons of indiscriminate destruction. These are highly advanced tools that allowed an animal the size of a border collie to survive on a continent full of horns and teeth and claws.

Unfortunately, despite millions of years of evolutionary tuning, the future for African painting dogs looks bleak. According to van der Meer, there are fewer than 650 breeding pairs left. Human unrest is a problem, as livestock owners view poachers as pests and shoot them on sight. Dogs are also killed by unintentional trapping, being hit by vehicles and by diseases such as rabies and canine distemper. And every death counts.

“When a pack loses many members and the pack size becomes too small, an entire pack can disappear due to reduced hunting and breeding success,” van der Meer said.

Today it is habitat loss. The remaining entire population currently survives at 9.4 percent of the species’ historical range. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has declared the wild dog endangered since 1990, and the population is still declining. African wild dogs are a species in its twilight years, and one that is often overlooked by flashcards and picture books to teach our children about wildlife.

From the peaceful transfer of power and breeding to the hedges that made the animals famous, the complexities of African wild dogs make them more attractive to hunters. “It was pretty wild, to be honest,” Ryan Bethencourt said, recalling a trip he took with his father at age 10. “I loved animals, I took care of our many dogs and cats, and then I saw a dead pig in front of me.”

He remembered seeing the fear in the animals’ eyes, as if the life had been drained from them. “They were slaughtered in front of me,” he recounts, noting the day the pig left.

It was more than 30 years ago, since Bethencourt emerged as a leading scientist, entrepreneur and investor in the alternative protein industry. A trip to the farm offers pictures of a man who cares deeply for animals — he grew up with a bunch of dogs, cats and other “exotic pets” — and Wild Earth, the company that makes food for our furry friends, is expanding. that image
