Dog owners and animal welfare charities have called on petrol stations to introduce dog toilets and facilities.

Many of the UK’s biggest gas stations, such as Moto, Extra and Road Chef, do not allow dogs on their premises. This is a problematic policy for dog owners traveling alone or with children during the summer.

The problem was highlighted by dog and puppy behaviourist Louise Glazebrook, 40, in an Instagram post on Thursday 5 August.
Glazebrook was traveling in London with her children and family dog Pip when they stopped at a petrol station in Cambridge to let her eight-year-old son use the bathroom.
“I parked the car and looked at the thermometer in the car and it said 28 degrees and I knew I was alone with my baby,” she said.
The RSPCA strongly advises against keeping dogs in cars even on mildly warm days, saying “when the temperature is 22 degrees, the temperature in the car can reach 47 degrees within an hour”.

Feeling he had no other choice, Glazebrook got out of the car with the kids and Pip and walked towards the gas station entrance. There she waited for her son to come running in and use the bathroom.
“Leaving Pip in the car didn’t seem like an option and I felt very uncomfortable with my son getting in alone.
“I had to choose between my dog dying in a hot car and my child’s safety,” she added.
Glazebrook’s Instagram post has been viewed more than 3,000 times, with many dog owners sharing their own experiences of the challenges they face when traveling alone with their pets.

On its website, Motto urges people to keep their pets in a safe place instead of leaving them in cars.
But the RSPCA criticized the advice, noting that dog thefts have increased by 170 per cent during the pandemic, as documented by the charity DogLost.
“We do not recommend that owners leave their pets outside of shops or gas stations, but it is very dangerous to leave pets in cars in hot weather,” the spokesman said.
“We want to provide more dog-friendly facilities in places like gas stations to help people use the facilities and keep their pets safe,” he added.

: “Motorway service stations put dog owners in a very difficult position who are responsible for traveling with their pets without keeping the dog in their seat.
“Dogs Trust will therefore call for dog shops to be opened at motorway service stations to save owners from having to deal with difficult and potentially dangerous problems.
“We are delighted to partner with such facilities to help them on their journey. They are more dog friendly. In the meantime, we encourage owners to plan their trips around dog-friendly stops.”
For health and safety reasons, dogs are not allowed on the premises. The only exception is small pets in a secure pet carrier.

“The health and well-being of our customers and team is our number one priority and we cannot leave pets at risk,” he said.
“Although most pet owners are responsible for the care of their pets, there is no guarantee that they will be able to control their pets throughout the visit,” she added.
Roadchef said it had installed temporary toilets at its busiest stations, including Sedgemoor and Taunton Deane, to help dog owners over the summer.
“If members of the public contact us before the trip to explain their situation, we will do our best to ask team members to look after their dogs while visiting the toilet,” he added.
