If you’re looking for something a little more connected to nature, the 13 Acre Retreat may be the perfect place for you. I first discovered this hidden gem when I was looking for a weekend getaway for my husband and I for our two-year wedding anniversary last winter. Nestled on 13 acres of wilderness, these beautiful cabins are located an hour and a half outside of Dripping Springs, San Antonio.
Each stateroom features air conditioning/heating, a small coffee maker, comfortable beds with fresh linens, and beautiful Texas mountain views. There are two spa complexes on site, but don’t let that scare you! They are beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean! Other amenities include a water cooler to fill your reusable bottles, a sink with soap for washing dishes and hands, and a hot shower. However, there is an outdoor shower, which is very nice, but can be a bit chilly if you are visiting in the colder months.
There is no shortage of things to do while staying at the 13 acre retreat You can hike the property (note: there are no trails, so it’s an adventure!) or hop in the car and visit the many nearby state parks, like Pedernales Falls. After the leaves begin to change color, the lost maple becomes a hot spot of activity It is highly recommended that you reserve a campsite in advance, sometimes up to a year in advance Due to COVID, access is more limited and you must reserve your passes (both camping and day) online or by calling the Customer Service Center.
I promise, it’s worth it! Not only is Lost Maples a beautiful piece of nature year-round, but there are more than 10 miles of trails you can explore, including a loop that takes you over a 200-foot peak. There are 30 campsites with water and electricity and about 50 primitive hiking camps, many of which are within walking distance of composting toilets.
If you or your dog aren’t really camping, you can take a day trip to Lost Maples It’s definitely close enough to drive there in the morning, enjoy a walk and drive home in the afternoon Still, it’s hard to beat a night or two under the stars, especially when the weather turns cold enough to curl up in your sleeping bag with your pup.
