One weekend in April Haggis, Angus and I explored the east side of Loch Lomond. While most people prefer the noisy west side of the lake, we decided to go for the east side, which is home to lots of walks, nature and wildlife.

We were greeted with a perfect walking atmosphere on the lake shore, with blue, calm and peaceful waters. Angus loves to travel and we love taking him on our journeys, so Loch Lomond was the perfect base for a great weekend for us.

Although Loch Lomond is dog-friendly, organization is still important when traveling with your dog. Read on for our guide to visiting Loch Lomond with your dog!

The best way to see Loch Lomond is to combine driving and walking. We found that driving the east side of Loch Lomond gave us more freedom, but the road to Rowardennan was a bit bumpy which definitely left us wishing we had driven a bit more!

Loch Lomond places great value on sustainability, so we tried to go to as many places as possible. After all, one of the best parts of spending time in Loch Lomond is immersing yourself in nature. You can walk in either direction as the West Highland Way runs along the east side of the lake.

Another great way to explore Loch Lomond is by e-bike; An e-bike charging station is being built in Drymen Square and there are some cafes (including Balmaha’s St Mocha Coffee Shop).

The best way to get to the east side of Loch Lomond is to take the train from Glasgow to Balloch and then the bus to McGill’s Balmaha. The only way to get to Balmaha is by public transport, so you’ll need to walk (about 2.5 hours) or go to Rowardennan Lodge Youth Hostel.

We stayed at Rowardennan Lodge Youth Hostel, one of Hostelling Scotland’s hostels. This former inn is located on the banks of Loch Lomond. There are incredible views here, and many bedrooms and living rooms have lake views.

Our private room had a stunning view of Loch Lomond to wake up to. The bathroom is shared and the shower is the best I’ve experienced in a hostel. The wi-fi is a bit spotty but I hear it will be fixed soon – and this is where you’ll want to relax rather than scroll through social media!

A Dog-friendly Itinerary To The Scottish Highlands

This blog post was written as a paid partnership with Hostelling Scotland to write a dog guide to Loch Lomond. All opinions are my own.

There is a large kitchen and several dining rooms where you can prepare your own meals or enjoy a hot meal cooked in-house.

You can choose a continental or cooked breakfast; You can also order three meals for the dinner we had one evening. We had soup and bread, especially Tikka Masala, for starters and chocolate cake for dessert – it was delicious!

Angus was able to dine with us; We brought him our own food and he cheered happily as we enjoyed our meal.

After dinner we retired to the lounge overlooking Loch Lomond where we had a quiet beer (yes, this hotel is licensed and you can buy craft beer!).

I have made many trips to Scotland and used these hotels as starting points. If you’re looking for a reasonably priced holiday home, these hotels are a great choice.

One of the best things about Hostelling Scotland is that it’s wholesome and family-friendly. We met people from all walks of life – young students, retirees walking the West Highland Way and people in their thirties (like us) who used the hostel to get around.

If you wish to bring your dog there is a small fee of £5 per night your dog stays.

The Clachan Inn is one of my favorite pubs in Scotland; The pub was licensed in 1734, making it the oldest recorded pub in Scotland and one of the oldest pubs in Scotland.

The bar area is dog friendly (and the best place to eat in my opinion). The owner and bar staff were very pleasant; They were happy to see Angus and gave him sweets and a glass of water.

I ordered the Aberdeen Angus burger which was delicious and Craig ordered the Steak Pie. He swears this is one of the best pies he’s ever eaten!

This pub has a local feel and has a really special place in my heart. In my opinion, it is a must visit.

Perch was also a highlight when we visited Loch Lomond. Located on the water’s edge, The Perch offers stylish yet casual dining. It specializes in delicious brunch, lunch and homemade cakes.

When we arrived in Angus we were greeted with food and kisses and given a bowl of water while Haggis and I learned what the food was. I chose the pulled pork sandwich which was delicious! He had a Caesar salad with haggis which he said was delicious too.

This restaurant/restaurant is more casual and dog friendly. Angus made lots of friends when we went out to dinner!

You can sit with your dog at St Mocha cafe and ice cream parlor in Balmaha. They make their own ice cream and coffee and are self-sufficient using the by-products of roasted coffee. They even prepared Puppachino from Angus when we visited!

Next door is the Oak Tree Inn, where you can sit outside with your dog. The Oak Tree Inn has twice been named Scotland’s Best Pub and its ingredients are sourced locally wherever possible. They offer a variety of foods including pizza, burgers, fish and chips and steak pie.

If you love the sound of homemade soup and bread, The Soup Dragon Café in Drymen is a vegan/vegetarian café with a lovely outdoor area where you can sit with your dog. There are also wonderful forest walks here.

If you’re looking for a more challenging walk, Ben Lomond is a popular choice. Ben Lomond, Scotland’s southernmost Munro (a mountain above 3,000 meters in Scotland), is popular with walkers from Glasgow and even Edinburgh.

I recommend you spend more than one day in the region, especially since the Ben Lomond tour takes 4.5-5.5 hours.

Murchison Tree Walks

The great thing is that if you stay at Rowardennan Lodge Youth Hostel the journey to Ben Lomond starts at the hostel!

For a short hike with stunning views, Conic Hill is a popular choice. Conic Hill is a popular hiking spot among locals; Many Glaswegians flock to this hill at the weekend, climb it and return home in time for dinner.

The walk takes you through the forest and slowly uphill until you reach the kissing gate, then the steep but passable trail. The kissing door can be difficult for larger dogs but Angus eventually discovered we didn’t need to get him through the door!

The view from the first little hill is incredible; It’s right opposite Lomond Lomond and the islands, and of course the great Munro is opposite Ben Lomond.

Angus loved this short but steep climb and we saw many dogs of all breeds and colors along the way.

Make sure to keep your dog on a leash at all times as there are often animals around.

Did you know there is an island in Loch Lomond where you can bring your dog? Meet Inchcailloch Island!

This island is part of the Loch Lomond National Park and is definitely one of the most popular ways to see Loch Lomond. Known for its natural and scenic beauty; The view from the top of Tom na Nigheanan is said to be one of the best in Scotland!

There are ferries from Balmaha Boat Yard and Luss from April to October (this is a rough guide; it also depends on the water level when the ferries are operating). It runs from 9am to 5.30pm and costs £7.50 return – and yes, your dog can get on board!

Irish missionary Saint Kentigern settled on the island in the early 8th century. He lived on the island until his death in 734 and, according to legend,
