Take a long walk, spend an hour at the dog park, or go for a run. If they are sleepy, they will be less interested in playing, roaming or sniffing around the airport and are much easier to handle. I always follow this motto: A tired dog is a good dog.
Once your pet is in the airplane cabin, they are confined to a small space and cannot stretch their legs. Whenever possible, walk your dogs before and after boarding. This tires them out and also frees up their hands.
It helps to use a double dog when traveling through the airport, there are no tangled leads so you are on your own.
