I have been traveling with dogs in my area all my life. Growing up in Silicon Valley, I took many dog-friendly walks in the Bay Area with my family as a child. From Windy Mountain in Portola Valley to Arastradero Cerva in Palo Alto, we love to get out with our big paws.
As an adult, I’ve taken all the trips on this list in my boyfriend’s little gold dress. We walked a lot from North Bay to Peninsula. This list contains some of my favorites. They love puppies as much as I do, and we can recommend them from personal experience (although I’ll tell you a little more about them than that).

My list of the best dog-friendly hikes in the Bay Area includes Mt. Encompassing McKinney Ranch State Park in the Santa Cruz Mountains and San Pedro Valley County, this rapid is an ideal destination for getting out into nature in San Mateo County, California.
The mountain is 1898 feet above sea level. The surrounding area is a walking trail that connects to other areas around North Peak and Mountain State Beach. It’s a day trip from San Francisco.
Mount Montara is located in the South Pacific Ocean. It covers an area of 690 square meters and is visible from 8 am to sunset. There are many excursions you can do, all of which are dog-friendly. They range in distance and difficulty, so there are options for every fitness level.

If you want an easy hike, the 1-mile Gray Whale Cove trail is a great option. This will take you from Gray Whale Cove State Beach to Montana State Beach and Highway 1.
After a small hill at the beginning, the road is relatively flat and has lovely views of the beaches. The trail sits on the beach so you can see the entire ocean.
If you and your dog want something more challenging, you can start at Gray Whale Cove Trail and continue on to the North Peak Access Trail or the Old San Pedro Mountain Trail. Both involve gradual ascents, so they are more difficult (but not too difficult) than the Gray Whale Cove trail.
Fire is the first path, so the path is wide. A 3.9-mile hike each way takes you to the summit of Mount Montara. You can enjoy spectacular views of the coast and the entire bay area.

Finally, the Montara Mountain Trail is a fairly challenging trail that starts at San Pedro Valley County Park and connects to the North Peak Trail. From there you can follow the path to the top of the mountain. 2.1 miles each.

The trail is dog-friendly and not as steep as some in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, so it’s a great option if you’re looking for a game walk in the woods.
Roberta Valley is located in the northern part of the Marin Peninsula. It has the largest oak and lavender groves in Golden Gate National Park. More than 500 plant species grow here, and the area has lowland and mixed forest habitats.
Robot Valley Road is 2.58 miles. It’s fairly flat at the beginning and end, with lots of steps in between.
This is because the walk is partly circular and partly out. It starts at the one-lane Oakwood Prairie Road and then joins the Oak Valley Road (sometimes called Fire Road Road). From there it goes to the trail where it meets the Altai.

Once you reach the Alta Trail, you can turn around and retrace your steps to where Oakwood Valley Trail meets Roboreti Prairie Trail, then retrace your steps to the parking lot along the Fire Trail.
Oakwood Valley Trail connects with Tennessee Valley Trail next to Strong Meadow Trail, so you only have to walk a short distance to get back to your car when you reach the end of the trail.
The hike starts at an elevation of 33 feet and reaches a maximum height of 221 feet. It’s most useful before and after the middle section, so skip this section and turn around if you and your dog want to go flat.
