Wondering when is the best time to book a family vacation these days?   Well, I can tell you that the short answer is as soon as possible. Today I thought I’d share some travel trends, some interesting things I’ve seen in person, and how I recommend you approach your family travel goals in 2023!

Planning a family trip is very different from booking a trip for a solo traveler or even traveling as a couple.  For the latter it is much easier to find rates for 1-2 people, and almost any type of hotel room can accommodate 2 people, while families should look for double rooms or suites when traveling.  So while I found some great suggestions for traveling the world solo, which would be a little difficult with two kids at home, this blog post will be entirely about family travel with my family of 4 as the data point.

Woman Ditches Her Family Vacation, They’re Furious As They’ve Planned To Exploit Her

As I write this post in November 2022, I feel it necessary to point out that this trip is not just “back to normal,” but it is back with a vengeance.  There are several factors involved!   And it seems that a possible impending recession is not one of them, as people spend more time traveling than ever!

With 2020 and 2021 either non-existent or very difficult to travel, people’s desire to travel is greater than ever.   As they say, the absence of heart makes you happy!  In addition to this urge to travel, many are actually feeling like they have more cash left in their travel budget due to canceled trips and the inability to travel, which has resulted in record crowds hitting many popular destinations this fall. with no end in sight.  Everyone is crazy about booking plane tickets!

But now let’s talk about this year. 2022 has been a wild ride, to say the least!   During the first half of the year, many American families were still hesitant to travel (especially internationally), largely due to travel restrictions and shipping issues.   I can say that nothing has been more stressful than making random appointments at CVS in Tallahassee for a nasal swab on the way to Cape Canaveral for our Bahamas cruise, only to find out the next day that they lost my sample.   Fortunately, a good pharmacist from St. Augustine came to my rescue and fixed everything less than 24 hours before our cruise departed.

I know that my experience was not unique, and the fear of situations like mine meant that for most of 2022 there was always the opportunity to find delicious places and discounts for family trips.   It was easy enough to book a last-minute trip, and I know my wheels kept coming off as I planned (mostly fictional) trip after trip for my family.  We were limited by school and sports schedules and it made me wish (for a minute) we were still homeschooling the kids!

What I Did On My Summer Vacation

But the travel industry has changed dramatically in the last two months and clear trends have emerged that show us what to expect when planning a family vacation in 2023.    I have personally encountered many obstacles and higher prices than ever before when trying to plan trips. during the school holidays, so much so that we are going to Europe next week because honestly, it was cheaper than anywhere else I looked (mainly the Caribbean and Mexico).   And we even ditched the tropical vacation we were going to take at the end of the year and instead took advantage of great deals to see family in the Midwest and save money!

So we’re going to Greece and St. Louis/Dallas before the end of the year, and if you’d asked me a few months ago what our travel plans were for Thanksgiving and Christmas, neither would have been on my radar.  However, here we plan for both!

With only 6 weeks left in 2022, I’ll be focusing on family travel in 2023, and I’m sure the trends I’ve encountered recently when trying to book trips for my family will be even more evident next year.  That’s why you have to plan ahead and/or be flexible.

And although I just got them out of my head, research shows I’m on the right track.  In a recent survey conducted by the Family Travelers Association (for which I am part of the media committee) and the New York University School of Professional Studies, a few things really stood out to me!

If You Get Covid On A Family Vacation, Can Others In The Party Avoid Infection?

85% of parents say they are very likely to travel with their children in the next 12 months

The willingness to use a travel agent for family trips is 52%, a significant increase from behavior reported in 2021, when 17% used a travel agent.

.  I also found it interesting that the parents interviewed indicated that their priorities for family travel included:

.  In addition to wanting to travel with the family, the survey clearly shows that around 50% of people are also thinking about spending more.  Of the 1,002 parents who participated in the survey, 5

My thoughts and research aside, you’re probably here because you want to travel with your family in 2023 and want to know what to expect.  In the following sections, I will give you my recommendations based on 3 destinations in the area: Mexico and the Caribbean, National and International.  I hope you find this information useful and I would love to hear your opinion on the topic.  So leave me a comment on this blog post!

I decided to talk about family trips to Mexico and the Caribbean first because I personally see the highest demand there, which isn’t funny because those are also my favorite places.  People want to travel to both because they are tropical destinations with a warm climate, often easy to access and that really feel like they are on vacation.  For many Americans, this is the big trip they’ve been waiting for!

If you want to visit these tropical destinations, book your trip as soon as possible.  In particular, if you haven’t booked your spring break, it may be too late and you should definitely confirm your summer plans now.   While researching for our spring break, I already saw prices much higher than what I was used to seeing, and I had a hard time finding a place with a reasonable price and accommodations.  I found a few flights that looked promising, only to see that a mid-range all-inclusive resort was over $7,500 per week.

What I Learned On My First Post-cancer Family Vacation

So there will be few hot spots here and I can safely say there will be no last minute discounts on places in the Caribbean and Mexico.  You may also be lucky enough to find cruises, which I think are a great option for families, so be sure to check them out too!

You can also start with travel pricing examples for the 2023 fall and winter holidays to get an idea of what’s available.  I guess my motto here will be: the first bird catches the worm! And unfortunately for me, I fell asleep!

Domestic travel will be interesting in 2023!  I think a lot of families are “off the road” and trying to plan trips to different destinations that require flights.

What does this mean to you?  There are probably big gaps to fill in destinations within driving distance.  And often, when your kids are as busy as mine, a 3-4 day trip is all you can manage.   So, look for nearby cities, lesser-known beach destinations like Jekyll Island, and similar places.   If you have teenagers, consider doing something active and outdoors.  We always talk about how much we enjoyed our rafting experience at Wildwater Ltd!  And keep an eye out for hidden gems, like swimming with manatees in Crystal River, Florida, or a boat ride in Austin, Texas.

Take A Family Vacation To The Great Smoky Mountains

I also think there will be airfare deals available for domestic travel, but for places that aren’t traditional “vacation spots.”  For example, we couldn’t find a warm place to visit over winter break that was close to what we wanted to pay.  Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate luxury travel, but what I saw during my research were uncomfortable flights and mediocre accommodations at high market prices.

For this reason, we decided to switch gears and go from Panama City Beach, Florida to St. John’s. Louis, Missouri
