Our son Lincoln has been traveling with us since 2019 and is a big part of why we love road trips. Simply put, jumping in the car is the easiest way to travel with him (and bring Lincoln wherever we go).

So we talked about our travel bucket list and came up with this trip to Lincoln’s bucket list. If you have a dog that wants to do all the things you do while walking and you’re looking for hiking ideas, this is for you!
Lincoln takes you to New England on this tour because the summer and fall are beautiful, there are plenty of outdoor activities, and you’ll find some of the best parks in the United States.

In summer, take advantage of longer daylight hours and cooler temperatures than you’ll find in many other countries this time of year. Or take a fall trip to use your beautiful leaves in some of the best places in the world for your leaves.
We spent 5 months in Ontario and New England during our 2022 travel season. We spent 2 weeks in VT in July, a week camping on Schoodic Peninsula in Acadia National Park in early August, 3 weeks near Lake Placid, NY in mid to late August, 1 month in Campton, NH in September, 3 weeks. in Ellsworth, ME in early October, three weeks in Attleboro, MA in late October. (We spent three weeks in Ontario at the beginning of our trip.)
There is never a bad time in New England during these months. Sure, the summer months can get hot at night, but make sure air conditioning is on your list and you’ll be fine. (To be fair, we say this as Texas residents, so maybe our tolerance for heat is higher than someone who lives up north. , maybe our tolerance is lower, ha!)

However, if you want to plan your road trip for your beautiful tree, we suggest that you aim to travel in the second week of October. Although the areas known for the vegetation are crowded (eg Cancamagus Highway, Stowe, VT), the view is important!
RTL Tips: Do you want to spend a lot of time walking or boating on your road trip? Go in July or August. Do you want to walk around your yard with an apple in hand? Go in October. Want cooler temperatures with fewer people? Go in September.
Lincoln no doubt loves the trips we take because it’s easy for him to join us. If you have anywhere near this road to drive, that’s what we recommend. Drive up to the side of the road and make a full circle around the house.
However, if you can’t get here by car and have a dog that can fly, you can fly into Boston International Airport and pick up a rental car when you land. If you’re flying, we recommend making the route shorter and driving from Boston > Lake Placid > Stowe > Lincoln, NH > Acadia National Park > Portland > Boston.

We recommend doing this as a full-time tour, where you stay somewhere different on each of your trips. You can search for campsites near any location or stay in nearby towns.
Consider Lincoln, NH, Pemi River, Lost River Valley Campgrounds or downtown Lincoln. (Can’t find anything in Lincoln? Check out Campton, NH, just 20 miles south. We had a great month at one of the red barns in Campton.)
For Lake Placid, consider Rollins Pond Campground, Ausable Chasm Campground, or Lake Placid Village. (Want a great view? Check out the Lake Placid area where you live.

Mirror Lake. Mirror Lake Inn has dog-friendly rooms and a restaurant with a dog-friendly patio. Can’t find anything in Lake Placid? (Try near Wilmington.)
For a stove, consider Smuggler’s Notch State Park Campground or Stowe. (You can also check in Burlington, 40 minutes away. Burlington is a very dog-friendly city!)
Consider Black Woods Campground or the town of Bar Harbor in Acadia National Park. (Can’t find anything there? Try Ellsworth, ME. If you’re in Ellsworth, check out the Blue Hill Mountain Tour at Sunset. It’s beautiful, dog-friendly, and offers spectacular views of Acadia with a 1/100 scale! )
Lincoln (not to be confused with our dog, the town has the same name) smack dab in the middle of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. This makes it a great place to start a dog-friendly trip.

You could easily spend a week exploring this area of New Hampshire on your own, as there are so many dog-friendly attractions and things to do nearby! (We stayed here for a month and didn’t see anything on our list!)
But since we only planned one day to enjoy the White Mountains on this trip, here are our top picks for the best things to do.
This is a bonus because you can take the Cancamagus Highway from Portland to Lincoln. (Each time you make the drive on your road trip, come back to this section. Unless you’re going to hop on this road, figure it will take you two hours to get there and back on the Kankamagus Highway to be in Lincoln.)

The Best Dog-friendly Beaches In New England
Cancamagus Highway is 34 miles between Lincoln, NH and Conway, NH. It is one of the most popular drives in New Hampshire and one of the best places in the United States to see your fall. While there are plenty of things to see and do on this amazing vehicle that will keep you busy throughout your trip, we encourage you to stop at the lesser-known routes on this vehicle. (We have more to come!) Note: Visiting in the fall? Wake up early. This bus fills up quickly, so go the day before or get up early to avoid long lines and traffic on the way to your destination. Kancamagus Road is great, but it’s best not to make it your only activity for the day!
Let’s get you and your baby out of the car and into the woods! Hiking was the activity that kept us busy during our month in New Hampshire. We searched every week, most nights of the week. Being outdoors is one of the best things to do in New Hampshire.
You can see all of our favorite hikes in New Hampshire here, but if you want our top picks, we recommend you head to Welch-Dickey Mountain. This 4.4-mile hike is a scenic half-day hike with mountain views. It’s dog-friendly, great exercise, and fun if you’re hiking through exposed rock and wooded trails.
If you’re looking for both hikes, look for the Welch-Dickey Loop Trail (not “Welch Mountain Rock Ledge” or “Welch and Dickie Mountains”). Following the entire loop route will ensure you see the cliff face.

Welch and Mount Dickey. We recommend going clockwise to get on the slopes. (This is especially helpful if it’s wet or if you visit after the leaves are down. Take your time; the ground can be slippery.)
