Despite the long journey, this vacation is worth it! You see, Quebec turns into a Christmas village during the holiday season, just like in a Charles Dickens book; Carol. Here’s where to stay, things to do and places to eat with your loved ones.

We stayed at the dog-friendly Fairmont Le Château Frontenac. Perched high above the San Lorenzo River, this hotel looks like a castle in the sky. A five-star luxury hotel, it is the most photographed hotel in the world! The hotel accepts up to two pets of any size for $50 CDA per night.

The interior of the hotel is fully decorated for the festive season and its halls are decorated with beautifully decorated Christmas trees. It didn’t take long to check in and we were surprised that Gatsby was patiently waiting for us in line even after a long drive. The hotel staff made sure Gatsby was well taken care of. I don’t eat chips, so we asked the hotel to make salmon and grilled meat. The staff even asked Gatsby if his salmon was cooked to the right temperature!

The best thing about Fairmont Le Château Frontenac is that it offers dog-sitting services! We booked a sitter to come when Danny and I went out to eat and when we went dog sledding. They charged $26 per hour (CAD) to watch Gatsby in our room for a minimum of 3 hours per person. You can book a sitter alone in the room or let the sitter take your dog to play in the snow park outside the hotel.

We walked with Gatsby to Dufferin Terrace, the terrace that surrounds the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac. This upper area offers panoramic views of Old Quebec and the St. Lawrence River. There is a huge slide where people line up at the top of the slide (270 feet) to go down the slide that speeds up to 60 mph down! Gatsby stood by and enjoyed people falling!

The German Christmas market is open from 22 November to 23 December. and we can do it on the last day of Holy Market. We walked through the market and found beautiful unique Quebec-made crafts and foods such as Nuremberg gingerbread, German Christmas cakes and other German foods such as bratwurst, pretzels, wine and more.

The next place we checked out was the QuartierPetit Champlain District This place is an Instagram worthy vacation spot! The narrow cobblestone streets are filled with holiday lights and decorations. I enjoyed going to the shops and some even let Gatsby join me.

Place Royale is a few steps away from the Petit Champlain district and is where we visited Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, the oldest Catholic church in North America.

Go to the Place des Canotiers, a scenic square next to the river St. Lawrence. Gatsby played there in the snow and we walked along the river admiring the big snows.

Unfortunately we couldn’t eat at one of the restaurants in this area as there was no outside seating. Restaurants are outside in the warmer months and many people eat outside with their dogs. The only place that offered outdoor seating was Pub des Borgiai in winter. Even though it was snowing, we sat outside because Gatsby wasn’t allowed in the bar. I had a glass of wine and Danny enjoyed a warm bowl of French onion soup.

At the hotel, Danny makes a reservation for a romantic lunch at Bistro Le Sam & Bar Atrium. This restaurant has a great view of the San Lorenzo River. For starters, we ordered duck wings with maple syrup and Atlantic salmon tartare. I had the fried buttermilk chicken for my main course and Danny had the brisket. Of course we had a lot of wine and ended up sharing a dark chocolate cake.

We arranged for the pet to travel to see Gatsby, while Danny and I took the dog on Expedition Mi Loup! From the hotel we had to drive to Saint-Jean-de-l’Île-d’Orléans, which is about 20 minutes away. If you don’t drive there, the hotel can arrange transportation for you. I’ve been wanting to try dog sledding for a long time! When we arrive you can feel the energy of these dogs full of excitement and enthusiasm!

The lesson started with a short safety and driving technique, after which we went into the forest! I sat in the sled while Danny stood behind me driving the sled. The adventure lasted about 1 hour and there was a 15-minute lesson with the children. This experience was everything I wanted and I am so grateful to have met these amazing dogs. If you are going to try this, I suggest you bring a ski jacket and pants. I was wearing leg warmers which were really not enough to keep my feet warm.

Spending Christmas in Quebec was the perfect vacation. We enjoyed our stay at Fairmont Le Château Frontenac and absolutely fell in love with the cool atmosphere and festive atmosphere of the town. I have no doubt that Gatsby felt the same way. Cold weather, snow, ice, grilled salmon and room service steaks cooked to the perfect temperature, a hosted attendant and a warm, comfortable king size bed. What more could a husky ask for? I’m sure this will be Gatsby’s favorite dog vacation for a long time!
