Last week, my husband Sharat and I traveled with our dogs, Raju and Aisha, to Aurika Coorg, a luxury resort in Coorg set amidst 45 acres of rainforest and coffee plantations in the Western Ghats. First, a little primer on how we became pet parents. A few years ago, when COVID suddenly engulfed our lives and the first lockdown began, my husband and I joined a community of pet lovers to feed Indian dogs on the streets. And so we found a very cute pack of puppies that were lost in the park without their mother. They were only a few weeks old and we took turns feeding them. One of them was a strong and playful puppy, and one of our friends immediately named him Raja because that was his favorite name for any dog.

Raju grew mischievous and chubby day by day and soon became the happy but strong Alpha of the pack. Unfortunately, some trouble happened and apparently some hooligans beat him up at night when he was less than six months old and broke his spine. Raju, an extremely funny boy, was partially paralyzed and in a lot of pain – most vets told us to put him down. Finally, one of them agreed to the surgery and we brought him home, hoping that one day he would be able to walk and run like normal dogs. However, two years later, when he can stand and walk a little, he is still partially paralyzed and has no urine, but he runs with the wheelchair we bought him. And Raju is a bit of a wanderer because he has been to beaches and jungles and now he had a great vacation in the hills. His younger sister Aishu has always been with him through it all and she started living with us in the last few months and this trip was her first away from home.

As we sipped our welcome drink, Raja and Aisha greeted us. We even registered them as pets with specific details when booking.
The rooms had pet beds, treats and toys and they loved it. Everything is thoughtfully designed with your pet’s safety and comfort in mind. There were bowls for serving food and water. Despite the fact that the food for the dogs is selected, they can even sit with you in the restaurant at certain tables.
The staff treated the pets with such love that Raju and Aisha felt so comfortable there. They walked and ran with us, rolled on the grass, sunbathed, chased squirrels and ducks, looked from the balcony at the endless greenery, curled up and slept, dreaming of further adventures.
