Best Hiking Vacations With Dogs – Want to take your dog on a trip to a US national park. We’ll share what we think are the five dog-friendly national parks in the US?
US national parks offer many valuable services and experiences. Roaming freely with your four-legged best friend isn’t always one of the national parks where you can walk your pup.
Best Hiking Vacations With Dogs
I love national parks, I love dogs, and I love taking my “main person” with me everywhere. I also prefer to go places where he can go with me. (Except for an annual trip abroad to places like Greece, Patagonia or Costa Rica!)

Dogs are welcome in almost all US national parks, but what they can and cannot do there varies greatly. consider the moment of writing these lines with everything that remains in Alaska and Samoa). Cotopaxi and I love to go everywhere together. So, I began researching, understanding, and experiencing US National Parks that not only could he participate in, but he was legally allowed to leave the car and go on a trip with me!
Cotopaxi and I are in Maine’s Southwest Harbor in Acadia National Park on one of the many dog-friendly trails.
It’s an honor to bring your dog to a national park. Please keep them on a leash, clean up after them and be attentive. Most bear encounters on the Appalachian Trail are due to stray dogs, a ranger told me this when I hiked the trail in 2023. And while we’re at it… leave no trace and pack your 10 things :)!
Cotopaxi is B.A.R.K. Ranger, if you decide to bring together your best friends from all over the world, please think about it.
Hiking Or Backpacking With Your Dog
We stayed in this long and narrow Virginia national park for 10 days while I hiked 110 miles of the Appalachian Trail. The AT slopes in this park are relatively less steep than most ATs and are great for walking dogs. Big Meadows Lodge has pet-friendly rooms, and all three of our campsites had plenty of dogs. Campgrounds in the park also offer access to Waysides, which were shorter hikes when we weren’t on the AT. In general, this park is accessible to visitors to DC, Baltimore and some other East Coast cities. It will be nice to get to know your dog and you can get outside and explore. Of the dog-friendly national parks I’ve visited, this is probably the best.
From the Endless Wall Trail to Long Point and the Keymoor Miners, this West Virginia national park is famous for rafting and nearby rock climbing and mountain biking. There are also excellent walking trails for dogs.
The city of Fayetteville is a fun little town filled with makers, artists, breweries, and cafes. We stayed in this Bigfoot-themed Airbnb with a huge fenced-in yard that was also pet-friendly.
Cotopaxi probably won’t be paddling the new river anytime soon (its canoeing and kayaking experience is shocking at best). However, he enjoys hiking in NRG and this new state park is a great place to visit.

The first Cotopaxi National Park was also his first camping experience and our first trip with him. The national park and national park border each other and we took part in the 3 Dunes challenge which is technically within the national park. According to their website: “Pets are allowed on a leash in both the state park and the state park. Dogs are welcome on all beaches except the protected swimming areas at West Beach and State Park. They are also allowed on all trails except Pinhook. Glenwood Dunes Swamp Trail and Trail System.”
This is an often overlooked national park in the United States. It is located near Chicago and accessible to most of the Great Lakes. We camped at Dunewood Campground and from there you can hike and bike along Lake Michigan Goblin and Grocer (just a short walk from the campground).
During the summer we lived in two different small towns in northern Michigan bordering this beautiful Lake Michigan National Seashore.
And that included track maintenance, cleaning, and a few other things. This allowed Cotopaxi and I to walk the trails consistently. From Pyramid Point to Empire Bluff, from the Platte River trails to Alligator Hill, we had plenty of dog-friendly trail options. The only two trails I did that didn’t allow dogs were the Dune Climb and Sleeping Bear Point.

Up and down steps are also good for dogs. The small towns around Old Bear (Franklin, Interlochen, Empire, Leelanau, Leland, Northport, etc.) were also very dog friendly.
The only adventure I did leaving my partner and Cotopaxi at home was the ferry ride back to the Manitou Islands. I wrote about visiting the Manitou Islands on my website here!
Cotopaxi is in Joshua Tree National Park and one of the many dirt roads that few cars travel on, perfect for a trip to Yucca!
For example, we currently live in Joshua Tree, California, near the National Park. Dogs are allowed to run in the mud there (which we do a lot) but not on the trails. The reason for this is the water sources of endangered bighorn sheep on the trails. Resources are necessary for their survival and they see dogs as a threat. Sheep do not go to water sources when they smell/see/feel dogs nearby. Death Valley and Saguaro are two other parks he has visited, but he is not allowed on the trails. Then there are parks like the Grand Canyon. There are many paths on which he is prohibited from walking, but he can walk on any mountain path. You know, the Grand Canyon is a big place, and all it takes is a mountain trail. It’s a long time.
Top 10 Dog-friendly Hikes In Shenandoah National Park
Super friendly like the ones on our list, limited but possible like the Grand Canyon, and then you have to get creative or leave them at home like the Joshua Tree.
If you’re stopping to walk the dog and don’t want to take a detour, then the national forests are your place! They’re much less strict about where and when your dog can roam (still on a leash with poop bags, of course), but you and your dogs can really get behind it.
Visiting national parks and being able to take your dog with you is an unforgettable experience. It depends on how you want to spend your time there, but you’ll have to think about it when deciding which park to visit with them. It doesn’t matter whether you leave them at home or with a friend or not!
