Dog Friendly Lake Resorts Near Me – Unfortunately, the Snowy Mountains in the NSW Highlands are not the most dog-friendly place. Since most of the ski resorts and resorts are located in the Kosciuszko National Park, there are not many places for dogs to go.
It is still possible to stay with your dog in Jindabyne or just outside the national park and enjoy the surrounding beauty of this alpine region. These are my tips for visiting Jindabyne with your dog…
Dog Friendly Lake Resorts Near Me
So, since dogs are not allowed to enjoy the hiking and skiing areas in Kosciuszko National Park, what are dog-friendly things to do in Jindabyne and the Snowy Mountains?
Cozy Cabin Rentals In Virginia
The most reliable snow in the Snowy Mountains is at the higher elevations of Thredbo, Perisher, Charlotte Pass and Selwyn Ski Fields, especially in years when natural snow is abundant and ski resort operators must rely on artificial snow. Although none of these ski resorts allow dogs, they are not the only places in the Snowy Mountains where you can experience snow.
In colder periods, when it snows at lower altitudes, snow can also fall in the nearby town of Jindabyne – perhaps once or twice a year. While the snow probably isn’t good enough for skiing or snowboarding, sometimes it’s good enough for a fun snow game with your dog!
The most famous walks in the Snowy Mountains are within the Kosciuszko National Park, especially the many walks that lead to Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest peak. However, there are also some great walks around Jindabyne.
This is a paved walking and cycling route that starts at Banjo Patterson Park in central Jindabyne and continues for 3.5km to Discovery Parks – Jindabyne Caravan Park (no more dogs allowed), near Thredbo Beach.
Lake Tahoe Hotel Resort, Spa & Casino
A scenic walk along the shores of Lake Jindabyne, the route also passes Jindabyne’s only dog sports area, Claypits Recreation Area. If you do the full walk, allow about an hour of walking each way and keep your dog on a leash outside the off-leash area.
Lake Jindabyne was formed in the 1960s as part of the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Project and is now a popular trout fishing destination. The lake, which is one of the largest freshwater reservoirs in all of NSW, has populations of brown trout and rainbow trout as well as Atlantic salmon.
Fishing is especially popular during the hot summer months. Fishing is possible from the shore, but it is better to go to the lake by boat. If you do not have a boat or equipment, it is possible to buy a boat and fishing equipment from a number of outlets around Jindabyne. And of course your dog is welcome to join you, perhaps in a life jacket.
Lake Jindabyne is not the only lake with good fishing in the area, as Lake Eucumbene is also a popular fishing spot.

There are plenty of pubs and even a few pubs around Jindabyne, so there’s no excuse not to sample the local brews in the Snowy Mountains with your poo by your side.
Jindabyne Brewing is located on the west side of town and is open from Wednesday to Sunday. Meatballs are allowed, but there is also a small menu with food options ranging from grilled pies to schnitzels (including a vegan option).
Kosciuszko Brewery is located in the grand Banjo Patterson Inn, right across the lake shore. While you’re unlikely to see dogs inside the bar, their famous Kosciuszko Pale Ale is served in several area bars, and dogs are allowed at the tables outside.
Alternatively, head out of town to Snowy Vineyard and Microbrewery, home of the Dalgety Brewing Company. It’s a 40-minute drive from Jindabyne, but reviewers unanimously agree it’s worth it, especially for the carrot.
Rangeley Lake Resort
Dogs are welcome and Sadie the dog can greet them. It is usually open from Wednesday to Sunday, and there is also a restaurant within the hotel. The final length of the ramp is unsealed, with the best access via Bulgundara Road.
Just a 25 minute drive from Jindabyn in the heart of Berridale is Shut the Gate Wines. A small winery in the Clare Valley and Snowy Mountains, they share their Berridale cellar door with The Little Grocer. Take your pick and sit outside in the dog-friendly garden with a glass of wine and a plate of snacks.
While dogs are not allowed in Kosciuszko National Park, it is fine to drive your dog in the car through the National Park as long as you do not stop along the way. If you drive through the park without stopping, you don’t have to pay an entrance fee at all.
From Jindabyne it’s a 110km drive to Khancoban, near the Victorian border, on the Alpine Road. I think the most beautiful part of the drive was the first half when you drive past Thredbo where there was still snow on the heights in November and then over the Great Diving Range, in the mist.
11 Dog And Pet-friendly Hotels In Ireland
The whole trip to Xancoban takes about 2 hours, where you can stop for a break or lunch. There aren’t many options in Khancoban, so maybe pack a picnic lunch.
After visiting Khancoban, you can then return to Jindabyne by the same route or take the longer route via Kiandra. (On our recent trip we were actually on our way to Victoria.) I haven’t driven through the old town of Cabramurra to Kiandra recently, but if memory serves it’s even more interesting.
Allow about 80 minutes drive from Khancoban to Kiandra, near the Snowy Mountain Road junction. Then it’s a 90 minute drive back to Jindabyne. The total return journey time is approximately 4 hours and 40 minutes.
Please note that some of these roads are closed during the winter months and snow chains may be required on other roads. It is best ridden in the warmer months of the year.
Dog Friendly Cottages
Jindabyne has two spill-free dog play areas where your pooch can release his pent-up energy or simply have fun on an outing.
The first course is at the Claypits recreation area on the western edge of town, which shares the same ground as the disc golf course. There are some signs along the edge of the fixed area, by which the dogs must be on their feet.
There is also another dog area on the shores of Poeh Bay. It is on the south side of Cobbon Crescent, on the east side of the city. See the council’s website for maps of both areas.
When we visited Jindabyne, we had dinner at the Parc Cafe, next to the Snowy Region Visitor Centre. The cafe has several large outdoor tables where dogs are allowed.
Crater Lake Pet-friendly Vacation Rentals
A popular place, you may have to wait a while to get a table outside when it gets busy. Open daily for breakfast and lunch, the cafe is also a great place to stop for delicious coffee and flavored tea.
Another dog-friendly cafe perfect for brunch is the Birchwood Cafe, behind the Snowy Region Visitor Centre. The self-proclaimed ‘food hub’ of Jindabyne, the cafe is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner and is fully licensed. There are plenty of dog-friendly tables outside.

Consider Pender Lea for a year-round toastie option. Located in Crackenback, just outside the National Park and a 15 minute drive from Jindabyne, they offer a range of cottages, lodges and cottages, with pets welcome to stay with you. There is plenty of room for pets to explore.
While pets are not allowed to be left unattended, one of the six luxury pet kennels, each with indoor and outdoor areas (complete with heater), can be reserved for a daily fee.
Another great pet-friendly option near Jindabyne is Touchdown Cottages. Six cabins are located in a beautiful desert park setting, each off the grid and with plenty of privacy. As long as they are well behaved and socialized (as long as there are other dogs and small children around, up to one dog is welcome from each home).
Another group of dog-friendly homes nearby is Tinkersfield. Also located in Crackenback, they have several tall country houses sleeping two to eleven. Each combines rustic charm with modern convenience. Request a pet when you book. There are also kennels when you go out and need to leave them – ask for more information.
