Three miles south of Scarborough, this quiet, unspoilt beach is a hidden gem because the beautiful sand is calm all year round. The beach has a wild feel and the exciting waves make it perfect for surfers and windsurfers. With rock formations dating back to the Assyrian period, about 150 million years ago, this area is a great place for fossil hunting.

As much as we love our jealous friends, we must confess; Dogs can be messy babies. Some beaches do not allow dogs due to the pollution. But don’t let this fool you into thinking dog-friendly beaches are dirty. Most “dog-friendly” beaches, especially those we recommend as dog-friendly cottages, go to great lengths to keep them clean, making many beaches cleaner than their dog-free neighbors.
In the UK and Ireland, if a beach is ‘dog allowed’ or ‘dog friendly’, this usually means there are no restrictions on where dogs can go and what time of year they are allowed. We recommend packing and checking before leaving home, as “dog-friendly” and “dog-friendly” beaches usually welcome four-legged friends year-round, even in the summer. Conversely, access to dogs will be restricted at beaches designated as “dog restricted”.
